ACCENT COLOURS? YAY OR NAY

Hi all, I have just finished my living room/open plan kitchen. I am wondering if I should add some accent colours or stick to the monochrome scheme... any opinions??
It is a small one bedroom apartment and the rest of the apartment is white/grey/black too. Comments/suggestions much appreciated...

Thank you all for your input... really appreciated. I can see what you mean about the corridoor! I do have a large bookcase on that side and also a door to the balcony so dont wish to block it. I did have a charles eames chair rocking chair on that side but it looked a little out of place kind of in the middle of nowhere. I do love the rattan chairs and im gonna put those on the balcony. hmmmm maybe a knitted poof would do the trick??? I love the idea of bringing in some wood and will do that and some more greenery. Have seen a lovley artifical hanging spider plant! heres the bookcase...

beautiful room , love those prints , I've been looking for some like that , would you mind telling me where you got them?

I love the colours in the room as they are , I'm not a fan of pops of colour dotted around a room. I would live in it a while and see how it evolves , maybe a throw with lots of texture in a muted tone would look nice .

Thank you ggirl! They are from MADE. (online uk store) They are Balazs Solti prints- just checked-still avaliable....
comments taken on board regarding a throw and I will see how the room comes along... was considering a white mongolian set of cushions for the sofa to add some texture. WHITE AGAIN! lol

I agree with Rennew Traditional Building Materials - it's not a question of what's 'trending' or 'passé', but of really paying attention to the existing building and marrying that with the sensibility of the future inhabitant. Some spaces suit the industrial treatment, some don't, and no-one should be forced to be fashionable. I can't help thinking of the old Bauhaus principle of 'truth to materials' though. If you find yourself faking an 'authentically exposed' surface, then something isn't quite clicking in your analysis of what's in front of your nose. Not that I wasn't once taken in by an entirely ersatz 'industrial' café in Paris once, which was not, as I'd supposed, a converted butchers! The convincingly-aged metro tiles were to die for...

@rominamuscat Do you mean the ceiling/coving looks (sometimes) yellow, or the cabinets do? It’s probably a combination of the light (natural and artificial) with the paint colour causing the yellowish appearance. Lighting can often be the biggest factor in a paint colour not appearing as you expect all the time. (In the pic the ceiling looks okay to me). Monitor the colour during the day to work out when it looks yellowish and then you could try changing the light bulbs in the light fitting first, before thinking about changing the paint (It’s a cheaper experiment than repainting and might just solve your issue)!

im on the fence with this one as i like both, if the faux are good faux, but i get loads of free real flowers in the spring and summer as i end up with loads from the garden which would end up expensive if had to buy them every month, but i enjoy my faux when i can not get nice free fresh ones, so i would go for both

yes those cushions sound ideal , thanks for the details of the prints . I love the colours or lack of in your room , you have got the green from the plant , you could always add a green spider plant on the shelf below the telly to add texture and colour ..cheap so you can remove if you don't like it . I have them all over the house as they're the only plant that doesn't die on me.

Hi Kelly, we can definitely see a blush pink accent wall working in this space. Even if it's just added to the wall behind the tv, it would make the room feel a little more exciting! It could also look great on that bigger wall behind the grey sofa. Grey and blush is always a winning pair (:

I like it very much as it is. The idea of the Mongolian fur cushions sounds good. The only thing is that it seems a bit furniture heavy on one side of the room. Perhaps a small chair or a knitted pouf or something like that on the left side (in the photo), would be an idea. If you want to bring in colour, look at the ochre yellow(ish) that is in one of the prints. You could bring that back in accessories. They are easy to change.

I'm not really a fan of accent colours and I think the white cushions will be perfect. Lovely room!

I think if it was me I'd go for a wooden TV table with a band of colour on (possibly painted blue drawers) but I can never stick to completely monochrome! I also agree with Carolina the left side of the room looks a bit bare and almost like a corridor. But overall I love it and think the plant and cat add as much colour as you need!

What's really in fashion here are rattan chairs with a sheepskin and a cushion (I'm in the Netherlands). And I could see something like that in front of your cat corner.

Hi Kelly. It looks a great room. I would just add a textured throw over the arm of the sofa and some contrast and texture for the cushions and perhaps introduce another pattern. If you don't like colour then texture is fine but blush would be great. You could also add sheepskin seat pads (try Nordic house) for the chairs or just a sheepskin rug thrown over the back of one chair for a much cheaper option. I'd also change the glass fruit bowl for something else, maybe an old misshaped wooden bowl but something in a different material/texture. Personally I feel the tv and art is hung just a little too high but the TV might be fine for you! A couple of accessories would also be great. I've attached a pic of a dandelight which looks great under a cloche. In terms of faux plants and I always say this (!) but I love pussy willow and eucalyptus together and will work well in your room. I agree with Carolina re adding something on the left. You don't need this at all and may hate feature walls but I can see you like industrial so have found these wallpapers from rebel walls which I just thought I'd share! I agree with ggirl though, just let the room evolve a little more when you find things you love as it looks great already

Ah, now that we can see the bookcase, I take back my furniture heavy on one side of the room comment :-) Looks perfect!
