How would you stop things falling off the island?

Hi Deborah, I wouldn't be concerned with things falling off. I dont think i have ever had something fall off. An island can be a very useful area to prepare food and when plating for a diner party it is so useful. Hope that helps, Mary

It's theoretical in my case since I have never, in some 30 (at least!) places I've lived, the kitchen has never been big enough to contemplate an island.

We bought an old Mill house 4 years ago and are still decorating and renovating. I think we always will, but absolutely no regrets! I love it! I will confess that I have made a few mistakes, which we are now fixing, as we now know what we would like and what suits the building. I completely agree with the comments on lime plaster. All of the rooms are light but soft colours and I have fallen in love with Crown and Rose Authentic Chalk paint. We have dogs and I love the way that I can clean off any small tail wag splatters and the paint looks brand new afterwards. We have lots of beams and stone, so have decided to go for a rustic but comfy look, but with a few rather French looking items, like a big French dresser in the dining room. Light walls in soft whites and creams, which don't clash too much with the different stone and woods types. I have tried other colours, but it just doesn`t really look right and ended up going back to the neutrals. These houses have low ceilings and small windows, so keeping light was an important issue for us. The colours come from the cushions, throws and soft furnishings in sage greens and warm purples. The dining room, looks stark but rustic and interesting. Currently would like to find a large rustic wood or antler chandelier for above the table. Floors downstairs are currently old school quarry tiles in half and wooden floors in the nest, with a cheeky bit of rhino vinyl floor in the main hall. The quarry tiles are original, but long term, I would love to rip up the wood/vinyl and add in flagged floors, so been bothering our suppliers about how well under floor heating may work with flag stones... :) Upstairs is thick underlay, as when they built houses in that day, they didn`t really worry about sound travel, then carpeted. Best move I have ever made!!! Even when things go wrong, I don`t really care, as I am renovating for the love of it this time, not for money! Exciting times!!

I was leaving the marital home for a basement flat and I was feeling a little vulnerable and hard done by. Just me and my little cat so we needed a lovely new bed, just for us. I bought a large wooded sleigh bed from a local family store. They were lovely and came round that afternoon with the bed in pieces. They put it all together and gave me a free new duvet set. My new start.

How would you use this space for a utility / pantry

Beth. First thoughts would be to use the study as a Utility as there must be plumbing close by in the W.C Secondly, that is a beautiful big spacious room. Do you really want to cut it up for a walk in pantry? We renovated our house a few years ago and got rid of the walk in pantry so as to have a larger kitchen. It was a constant drag when cooking to have to go in there and find things. I honestly prefer tall order units with drawers for jars, tins, rice, pasta etc as they are so much easier to store and access. I want all my herbs and spices and oils right next to me when I am cooking not in a different room. Getting rid of the pantry was a blessing for us. I think you could extend the units on both walls up to where the windows are and then have a much larger island orientated in the other direction. Can you ever have too much workspace in a kitchen? I would say that the most important element in designing a kitchen is where the sink and appliances are placed. You can have a very small kitchen that works perfectly if you get the placment of thoes elements right. Mary
