what colour, White or grey windows? Help updating 1970s exterior
Comments (24)We have a very similar style of house and are also torn between playing it safe with white or light cream upvc windows to brighten the exterior or being a little more adventurous choosing grey. We are also having to replace all guttering, soffits and fascia ( we have 3 dormers to front and 3 at the back) so we are wondering about combining grey window frames, guttering and soffits with white fascias and white front door and white garage door. We are also supposed to decide by tomorrow but I am worried that getting it wrong will be a massive disappointment every time arrive home! i wish there was some way to "photoshop" the options onto an image of our house. Sorry not to offer any constructive advice but I found it reassuring to find another house owner struggling with a decision just like me!...See MoreFront of house - warm/soft white with grey accents. Comments (5)Big thanks tamp75. I really like your idea of RAL 9007 for garage door (standard product) and Sadolin "volcanic ash" for the window frames. Hadn't thought of that! And I think you might be right about the weathering of the "traditional" shade of Marshalls driveway products. Have been noticing this as a pass local front gardens. Anyone have any ideas for a warm/soft white shade for the exterior wall? A mum at school suggested RAL 9010 - she said that was the advice her sister (an architect) had given her on her house (she was doing the interiors). Any views?...See MoreWhite or grey windows?
Comments (9)I went for painting the whole of the bottom ( or render and paint -) in a warm dark brown / grey to tie in with the dark in the brick. On my screen Ral 8019 worked well. I then went either with keeping the windows white as it still works or going with a lighter beige / grey to tone in with the Ral on the walls. I also paved the driveway in a complementing stone, added a trellis in the same colour as the windows to make more sense of the bland space at the front, where you would presume a door to be....See MoreAnthracite grey upvc french doors or white?
Comments (9)Yes, if you just wish to freshen up your windows and they are in good order, painting them makes good use of what you have. If the supplier is reputable with a good guarantee on the product you will be covered against warping and big draughts. I believe that slight ventilation is usually required to avoid condensation. Our timber windows are around 140 years old and still going strong with no warping. I do urge people to consider the health benefits for the family - clean air in your home. In the long run, with timber windows last at least 6 times the age the value for money of timber which outweighs the cost of painting within one lifetime alone. Also timber will not be adding to landfill or use as much energy to create. Finally the character and quality of finish is much different. Here is a comparison for you. According to this timber costs less too. https://www.wwf.org.uk/sites/default/files/2017-06/windows_0305.pdf Hope that helps in time! Thank you for sharing and we hope to see some photos!
