Favourite part of the UK & Ireland?
Comments (44)I live in Cumbria it's crazy hearing people say it's one of there favourite places I guess you don't see what's on your doorstep. Berwick upon tweed is the place for me it's blissful I think I see it through rose tinted glasses for sentimental reasons. My family are from Ireland Donegal and Longford so those places for me hold all my childhood memories but the most magical place in the world is London.. What more can you want from a place that Pizza delivered at 4am...See MorePOLL: Do you have a fireplace in your living room?
Comments (50)A flickering flame surrounded by ancient carved stone - Antique stone fireplaces add both character and a sense of place to any room, the knocks and bumps of the decades nay centuries, connecting hearth to home. Even with the advent of central and underfloor heating we crave that focal gathering point that a fireplace provides - a room without a fireplace? Nowhere to hang the picture, mirror or tapestry, no were to put your cards and certainly no place to hang your Christmas stocking!...See MoreVictorian Renovation in London - Part 2
Comments (201)Thanks guys - we did a lot of experimenting and testing on some old floorboards before deciding on this stuff. The Osmo oil gives a deep and rich finish on old pitch pine that looks very different to varnish - deeper and with more of the grain being brought out. It's more like a beeswax finish from olden times, without the backbreaking labour and maintenance. Interestingly on the new boards (in the top bedroom), it makes far less difference: the new pine just looks yellow and shiny, much as it would if varnished. But the oil should be tougher and lower maintenance. We decided to restore these floors rather than replace as they were actually in remarkably good condition: this house has never had fitted carpets fitted, nor central heating fitted until 2014, and when it was installed it was installed with regard to keeping the floors intact (many systems installed in past decades saw the boards sawn up and hacked about). I wanted look that is obviously original, and can't be mistaken for engineered wood. I did think about a limewashed finish, but bottled it at the last minute and went totally traditional, as I thought less risk of a finish done to a trend that would be hard to reverse....See MoreShould we knock down part of a wall to create a snug/sitting room
Comments (12)First of all removing all the stuff that doesn't belong in a living room will help. The living room feels like a closed off space because it looks so different compared to the dining room and kitchen. Everything is white and has a nice tiled floor. I would suggest continuing with this in the living room or you could put the wallpaper from the dining room in the living room as well. Having a floorplan would help when designing the space, but I'll try my best without a floorplan. Where the fireplace goes I would suggest letting someone make a custom cupboard. You can hang the tv on the space above that cupboard and make that the tv station. I would remove the sofa from the wall and move it closer to the "fireplace". Add a nice carpet and a coffeetable. Add a floor lamp and pick a different light fixture. If you want you can also create a seperate reading nook. I hope this helped....See MoreSonia
