Hallways and staircases are some of the busiest areas of a home, and often provide a vital first impression for visiting guests. Unfortunately, they’re also sometimes forgotten or neglected, as we focus on sprucing up our main living areas.

Hello again all and sorry for the delay! i have now got a throw and started to extend my gallery over the corner. I grabbed an old chair and rug that were kicking about in my parents' garage and put them in the corner to give me some idea of what i want. actually, i kinda like the beat-up chair but i don't think the rug looks right. is it too small? Now i have the reddish throw (LOVE it... from the Avoca shop in Belfast - amazing place, if you are ever in Belfast do go!!) I am actually considering replacing my blind because i prefer red tones to the turquoise. Just not sure what I would get instead? Still need a fab lamp and more cushions but wisdom says wait for the January sales! I still think I need something more eyecatching on my vanity too... Considering a map above my bed but I don't know if it would compete with the gallery wall too much? have to say i do love the "hello" sign!

Help with living room colour scheme

Thanks guys - some really helpful suggestions coming in! And I hope everyone's had a good Christmas. :) After talking with hubby some more, we've had a slight change of plan and decided not to go with the statement yellow wallpaper. We will still be going with the same colour scheme (mustard & grey with purple accents), but we will be painting the whole room in one colour (light grey or greige) and adding the mustard and purple with the soft furnishings and artwork. Now I'm a little stumped... having trouble imagining where the colours should come in exactly. I will list the items that will be in the room: - 1 sofa (ivory) - Gallery wall above sofa (family photos) - Sideboard which will have the TV on, and tall glass-door cabinet (both Ikea Hemnes grey-brown, which to me looks light brown) - 2 small tables either side of the sofa with lamps on - Large area rug - Hubby's desk and some floating wall shelves above that - Possibly a coffee table or ottoman - Some art (not much, it's a small room) and flowers/other greenery Now that the wallpaper is gone, the first thing I can think of that could bring in a large amount of yellow is the rug... or is it best to keep the rug a neutral colour too? Could anybody post examples of any rugs/artwork/accessories/lamps/side tables that you like and might go with my colour scheme? I am also posting some pictures of rooms that inspire me. Really struggling to envision this room! Thanks :-)

You have some really good advice from everyone. If you can remove the wallpaper I would paint in Colortrend Goya, it is a green/beige colour that would suit the sofas and compliment your floor. This colour will be warm for your north facing room. A large rug would really lift the room as suggested above. I would recommend the Adum rug from IKEA in 200cm x 300cm. Again as above you need to sort the lighting, I agree with the 5 arm pendants (the spots are very harsh when you are relaxing watching tv). The light should not hang more than 50cm from the ceiling, try the Barcelona 5 light from NEXT, the shades will keep the bulbs from annoying you when relaxing. I would also stretch your curtain pole if it is extendable or replace it so your curtains (which are lovely) sit back further on the wall to let more light in. I would also replace your tv stand and table with a nicer piece and put it centred on the wall (you can angle the tv when people are sitting on both sofas). I suggest Besta Hanvicken White, the white is nice and light in the space and it measures 180cm in width. Add a chair to the corner where the tv is currently to hide the radiator and make the room more beautiful. Try IKEA Strandmon in green or dark grey. Some new cushions will really bring it together, try Voyage Maison from Harvey Normans. For the mirror above the sofa as a great suggestion above try the rectangular Songe mirror from IKEA. we have a similar hallway, although there is bend between the front and back room and then a back extension kitchen; the front door faces north. We have been through several incarnations regarding light. starting outside, we have a porch light, which helps to light the hall at night (if we use the override switch). the colours are portland pale above dado, and their darker shade below. woodwork Portland Pale too (eggshell)I would recommend leaving the dado in , it breaks up the tall wall and I am always hitting the walls with shopping and stuff and it is easier to paint over anglypta and it doesn't show the scuffs. All the paint is matt or eggshell, including skirtings/dado, so nothing jumps out at you it all recedes. we have a long mirror on the front part wall and a squarer one of the back so we get bounced light. Mirrors match and come from habitat. The door at the end of the hall is small glass pannelled to get the south light coming to the front of the house. The lighting is recessed into the ceiling and supplemented with pendant. We had the attic done and had a dome put in the top floor which floods light down into the first and ground floor. BTW it has taken us 20 years or so of trial and error..................... top photo from front, bottom photo from centre to back of hall
