What would you do with this garden?

West facing. Lawn needing lots of attention. Fancy a striking border at the back. Soil is clay & can get boggy in the corner by the honeysuckle. Like green & white colour scheme. Can't have grasses due to hayfever. Wall stripped of ivy & old shrubs & painted black. Don't want
ang tall trees to block our west favorites by sun but would like some height. Any design & plant suggestions welcome.

I think a raised bed along the wall at the bottom would be the way to go. This will allow you to fill it with better soil or compost, or a mixture, so you can grow more things.

I like the idea of a white and green scheme. It is probably fairly shady there with sun only in the morning, but there's still plenty of choices.

White peonies, maybe include a tree peony for height (they're expensive but long lived and very beautiful)

Iris sibirica

White foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea alba) is very elegant and also cheap as you can just buy a packet of seeds

There's a white variagated white flowered Honesty too - Lunaria annua alba variagata - grow from seed again, very effective for filling spare space.

Too many campanula varieties to list, they generally do OK with shadier spots. Just be careful to check the spread when buying as some of them grow everywhere and become weeds.

Hi, If you want simplicity I'd go for removing the grass and replacing with pebbles. There is an easy honeycomb system that holds the gravel in place, so good for driving over and still looking tidy. Have a look at "cedagravel" (there are cheaper alternatives but make sure there is a base membrane attached to the system to stop weeds). If you leave empty area in the middle you can plant Karl Foester Grasses which will blow gently in the breeze and stay upright with low level planting surrounding it. If you don't like grasses choose a small tree like a Chanticleer Pear Tree which will give interest most of the year - white flowers in the early spring and golden leaves in the autumn (a longer lasting deciduous tree). Always try to go to the nursery and pick your plants directly - or get actual photo as they can vary! Look at Round Box Balls, Hakonechloa or Mugus Mop to plant around the base. These will make the look tidy as the base of the grasses can get a little messy in the winter season. Good luck!

The red robin's have gotten a little big and now block the windows. Does anything else flower wise come up at other times of year? It's only looking straggly due to the daff and tulip stalks, they'll need chopping off soon, and you would presume something else would come up to take it's place. It's difficult to have a perennial garden in a small space as you can't pack enough plants that come up at different times of year, however, it's not impossible. You could have a change and go for slabs and pots, easier to maintain, but don't forget that they'll need water every day in the summer. Do you like gardening? If you do, stay with perennials but plant with different level plants to give interest, and make sure you've got something there righ throught the growing season, plus some evergreen's for winter. If you don't like gardening, go for the pots. Acers, Hydrangeas and Hostas all do well in pots, but get big pots or barrells.

Hi Wendy, thanks for your comment. It's all garden centre stuff, nothing too specialist. From memory: tree fern, fatsia, box, date palm, hydrangea, passion flowers, lilac, salvia, eucalyptus, lots of hosta and ferns, trachycarpus fortunai, wisteria and some grasses. Basically anything that google said was tropical but fairly hardy in U.K. climate. Hope it helps :)
