Example of open plan play room and living room

Hi all,

Because of planning regulations we can't have divider doors between a living room and a play room. So I'm looking for options and advice as to how best design a room where half of the function is a play space for a 3 year old and the other is a living space for the adults! I would like something vibrant and colourful. Any examples of people who have done this well?

Hi there.
Do you have plans or photos of the space?
This can easily be done with zoning or with a physical barrier between the areas like using the back of a sofa with a console to create a wall.
It would help to see the space :)

Hi! Its like this - https://screencast.com/t/mpkqfMw6. We can't have the divider doors as it won't be approved by building control. So looking for good ideas of how to separate out the space!

I agree with many of the suggestions above, especially that there's too much furniture in the living room. You're going to hate me for saying this but I think there's too much clutter and busyness overall for such a small space. I'd radically reduce the number of pictures and knick-knacks in both rooms – especially the living room – and move the ones you keep to less prominent places. I'd also take the coat rack and cookery bookshelves out completely, and replace the busy parquet flooring with either not-busy plank laminate or a simple-patterned or solid rug. Finally, I like trees but that spidery palm tree is hideous IMO.

Hi Jen P we used to have it like that but I wasn’t keen on the fact it blocked the entryway to an extent and you had to walk around it. (felt uninviting)We found ourself dumping a lot of stuff behind the black sofa so you can see it’s against the wall for now alongside the buggy( however we may move the buggy to the 2nd bedroom). Behind the entryway is a awkward nook with some shelving (with more junk we need to sort out, paperwork,books etc)we are thinking about turning into a small office...

Ok. Where do you enter? And where is the bathroom? Bedroom is upstairs? Fireplace will be used as such? Is the space next to the sitting room a hallway? Where could the soil pipe go?

I agree with everyone saying that open plan is good if you have a dedicated enclosed space for a snug or second living room. My son is an architect and he has seen a major change with people requesting ways to separate spaces to revert back to a more traditional layout. What about privacy for those moments when kids bring their friends over, they really do not want parents listening and being in their space! Designing a space for a growing family means trying to future proof the footprint. No matter how quiet appliances are meant to be, they will end up irritating you. We have a coffee machine, extractor fan, washing machine, tumble dryer, microwave, kettle in our current kitchen and are lucky enough to be able to move the kitchen into a 10sqm study to create a separate utility and then build a rear extension with a kitchen / diner / snug. We also have a ground floor loo and living room on the other side of the house. The noise of appliances we find exceptionally intrusive, partitions and half height walls may help reduce the noise but won’t eliminate them. Have you also thought about where you will store the kids toys, books etc and how easily you will be able to hide food preparation and washing etc from visitor? I do like the idea of having sliding doors if that is at all possible to zone off spaces when you do want a quiet area.

You want to split the living room? Your pic indicates it's only big enough for a living room? Do you have measurements of the room? Perhaps just boxed/stacked storage for toys would do?

What is the reason for no dividing doors? You could always get it signed off, then Install dividing doors afterwards...
