Can't tell exactly from the pics but could the two sofas be brought closer together positioned facing each other with a coffee table inbetween and the tv then put underneath the stairs? Would there be enough room to walk from the door through to the back room? It would make a nice seating area on the rug which you could change to a bold geometric monotone one if budget allows. Then some bold complimentary cushions also in monotones for the sofas and I agree with the pops of orange. I don't think it would matter if the sofas went right up to the present tv wall. At the moment everything seems to be pushed to the furthest extremes. Then you could have a table/desk or the pine cabinet under the window. I would paint it with Annie Sloan chalk paint which is very easy because you do not have to sand or undercoat and you can finish it with just a wipe of her wax which gives a nice finish. Paris grey is a good neutral colour. You could paint the wall with it also. (Sorry but I don't like the wallpaper sample. It looks too bedroomy to me.) If you are ever in a position to do so I would have the chimney breast removed because it has no purpose, takes up valuable space and is off centre as well. The wall facing the stairs would look nice a medium grey and needs a wow factor with a collection of some colourful or big art. I don't think the mirror works there. It just accentuates how the chimney breast is off centre. I would put pictures above the whole seating area on both the chimney breast and the wall to the right of it to centre the whole look. Not sure what you curtains are or whether they need to stay. Something to consider..... :)

the problem I think is that there is too much space in the room which makes it look quite empty, you should get a longer dining table that could fit 3 chairs on as h side, I'd put a large wall art canvas on the rear wall behind the table or a large mirror is also put a plant where the Hoover is located, you should bring the tv closer towards the kitchen so it's central on the wall I'd put a thick hidden support mahogany shelf underneath the tv and put pictures of your family on there maybe even a faux fireplace under the shelf of you can stretch to that!!!

Before rushing out shopping for different items you must decide how you will use this space; will it be just telephone corner?; will you need storage or hinging space?; how do you link this corner to the rest of your property stylistically, practically and colouristically? Answer these questions before taking inspiration from others. This looks like a dark corner, so perhaps adding a ceiling pendent light would be useful. In terms of plants - you have to look for some that thrive in shade - cacti family, succulents that are less needy? If you use this space for shoe/coats storage then perhaps adding a short two sided bench with box storage underneath and hooks on the wall would be useful? If you decide that this is decoration only space, then perhaps adding picture/photo frames would (a lot of them, containing colours linking to the rest of the property) add character. Placing interesting table lamp would already brighten it. Think: what do YOU need/want/expect from this corner? Then it will be easy.

Hi Jean, Love your mock up and to be honest most people struggle to visualise so you definitely aren't alone. To answer your questions: Do I 1. go different lights each area because ceiling and wise they are different areas. 2. Match the kitchen and dining areas, 3. match all three Personally I would ensure that all three are consistent in style. For example if this is going to be a modern living space, then I would stick with modern lighting (you can break the rules with one show-off pendant, perhaps over the dining table, but it would be a feature). Over the bar, due to the hob area, it isn't very practical to have pendants. You could have a surface mounted piece to make use of the fitting you have, but in this case I would consider lowering the ceiling throughout the kitchen to add downlights and use the hood as a source of lighting too. If that option is just too expensive (I totally understand) and you have to use what you have got, then a long or double strip of track lights which you can angle in directions for cooking would be my choice. It will also give you the output and practical lighting you are looking for. Another take but less expensive would be to just lower the ceiling above the bar (around the beam - extending either side). If you did lower the ceiling to add downlights I would extend it past the beam, just enough to fit a row in for the bar, this side of the beam. Many people are afraid of lowering the ceiling as they feel it will make the space "darker". In this case I feel like you read the height lower anyway, due to the location of the beam. Having a clean / neat / functional lighting solution would be my priority / preference here. That means you are pretty free to do what you want around the rest of the areas too and the change in ceiling height will add to a more theatrical wow when walking into the dining space from the kitchen, especially if you hang one or two focal pendants above the dining table. When it comes to the seating / living area around the corner, make use of floor standing lamps (in the same style, ie, country, modern, traditional as the other areas). They don't have to be the same colour, each space can have its own mood, but I would consider whether in each case you want to make the lighting a "feature" or not. So blend it in if you don't want it to stand out, and contrasting colour or shape for "look at me". I hope that helped you Jean, good luck and definitely let us know what you came up with in the end!
