Tips on keeping the home cooler...

I've heard a few good ideas over the last couple of days:

1) Keep house in shade during the day so close curtains and blinds
2) Open as many windows as possible including the loft hatch

3) Open curtains and blinds in the late evening to promote more air flow

4) The use of fans - if you can find any as they all appear to be sold out :)

5) Call your local AC contractor and get ready for a large bill...

Anybody got any other ideas?

If there is no cooling breeze keep the blinds and windows shut. Otherwise your just heating up the house. And of course open it up as soon as it starts to cool in the evening or if we're lucky a cool wind comes up. If your feeling really desperate you can wet a cloth and hang it over a open window. But that really only works if it's a dry heat or you risk making your house more humid.

Put a bottle of water in the freezer - then simply place on a tray (for condensation to drip into) in the corner of a room or in front of a fan. Particularly useful if you're worried your baby's room is too hot - this will stop your little one overheating.

Stephen Edwards makes a really good point about the thermostat, and it works both ways (ie causing the heating to come on when you don't need it, as well as going off when you do!). Thermostats are often placed in the hallway, which can be colder than the rest of the house by cold air coming in through a draughty front door. It sounds like you have systemic problems to solve, but once those are sorted out you could look at draughtproofing, paying particular attention to anywhere that affects the thermostat. If you identify your letterbox as draughty you could look at fitting one of our letterbox solutions (we do a lovely stainless steel front letterplate as well as an inner letter box draught excluder), and if you have a pet that's going in and out through a draughty, rattly old catflap we do a pet door too. Speaking from London I copy the habits of hot countries. Blinds have to be down before the sun hits the windows, then open the windows through the flat, not necessarily so much on the side being hit on the sun. Create a through draft from front to back, obviously windows have to be shut when you are out but leave blinds down or curtains closed then too. I have an old mansion flat and live on the ground floor so there are some inbuilt advantages from the solid walls and position. Energy required, me walking backwards and forwards closing blinds and opening and shutting windows. With the forecasts of ever increasing energy prices and warmer climate we need to design in low energy cooling methods as well as heating. In the future we may need to use our chimneys to bring in cold air at night to cool buildings as is done traditionally in the middle east.

The 'sock fairy' does her rounds when the children are in bed, and quietly puts them in the washing machine. The same for the dishes in the dishwasher. Then, the timers kick in at wake up time. It is lovely to think that the machines are doing all the work and I haven't even got up yet! Beds made and we're off to do life! No time for cleaning. We hire the person who does the floors windows and the boring stuff, and I make a point of inviting someone once a month when the whole family pitches in and we all go mad and make the house extra beautiful with flowers and such. We're all pretty neat and clean up and tidy as we go, so we don't really live in mess- but I'm not a slave to the Neatnik.
