Built in couch dimensions and tip

Hi everyone

I'm renovating my living room and i would like to build a long built-in couch. That means building a wooden base and just buying couch coushins to put on it. now i have 2 questions
1. what are the correct dimensions in section (height of the wooden base, height of the back coushin), considering that i have a 40 cm high coffe table?

2. how can i keep the coushin from easily slipping off when i seat? the base surface will be plywood and i'm afraid it would be a big problem

Velcro sewn to the cushion and also securely fixed to your plywood will hold cushions in place to stop the slippage. However that means you can only ever use one side of your cushion so they will show signs of wear sooner than if you can turn them.

We have an outside U shape sofa area that we made up with four single bed mattress toppers and lumber cushions ( recovered in waterproof /sail ticking ) - and they don't slip off because they are in a U shape - but would if just in an L shape !

Stephen Edwards makes a really good point about the thermostat, and it works both ways (ie causing the heating to come on when you don't need it, as well as going off when you do!). Thermostats are often placed in the hallway, which can be colder than the rest of the house by cold air coming in through a draughty front door. It sounds like you have systemic problems to solve, but once those are sorted out you could look at draughtproofing, paying particular attention to anywhere that affects the thermostat. If you identify your letterbox as draughty you could look at fitting one of our letterbox solutions (we do a lovely stainless steel front letterplate as well as an inner letter box draught excluder), and if you have a pet that's going in and out through a draughty, rattly old catflap we do a pet door too. Hiya Jill, thanks for sending those images over. In response to your first question about your bedroom, I can think of a couple of solutions that may work. The first is the same solution as my previous French window answer to @montbray and fit something that moves with the window, either a Pleated or a Venetian which operate under tension and open with a thumb tab rather than a cord. Alternatively, it would look quite nice if a blind, particularly a Roman blind was fitted right to the top of the wall above the window, at the ceiling. This will allow the blind to be ‘dressed’ to form a valance effect above the window when the blind is open, giving full view from, and use of the window and when it is closed, it will give the illusion of the window being taller. In the case of your bathroom blind, you might like to try a waterproof Roller blind made from PVC fabric. Alternatively, Faux wood blinds are a really great idea, as they have all the look of traditional Wooden blinds, but won't warp in wet or steamy conditions. Admittedly, it is a difficult window to dress and there are not a lot of options, but hopefully, these will give you some ideas. Sarah

I can see that a tv flat against the current blue wall may prove awkward to view from the room - but extending the idea of carolins illustration, placing the tv diagonally across the corner would give you more scope. Though you might feel this generates 'dead space' in the corner I think that the sacrifice would be minor in comparison to the improved viewing angle from the room. I would put a back on the corner bridge, painted blue. I also think that blue behind all the shelving would look fine - but why not make it up and stand it in place, then decide on whether you want to paint the other wall?

Thank you, this would have been perfect had the fire pit tables width been around 90cm. We are ok with the table block access to the left hand door of the french doors as in the future we will be having sliders or bi-folds. Thinking about it more, we could have it on the right hand side of the patio instead although it will some what restrict access to the single door into the garden...

The cushions would have to be very thick and heavy, requiring a lot of stuffing, otherwise not only will they have a tendency to slip, they would also be very uncomfortable to sit on. After all Sofa's usually have sprung bases for comfort.

Once you have your plywood box finished, you would need to cover that in the material chosen, and, underneath the cushions to save on expensive material you can just have thick, cheaper plain material, the same as you would get on a lot of sofas, that stops the cushions slipping.

I must admit, I've never seen sofa cushions for sale anywhere. They're box cushions so that they hold their shape. I did eventually find a company that will make sofa cushions to order cushion warehouse ( doesn't sound cheap )

I also found another site Foam For Comfort, I priced up just six sofa cushions copying our sofa size and it came to £1569.

Seems like a hell of a lot of work! Maybe it would be better to consider purchasing one as OnePlan suggests.

Thank very much for your answers! Actually i know a place here (i live in Israel) that will make the coushins for a very fair price. So if i understand correctly you suggest to cover the plywood base with some fabric like in the example images? Do you have any suggestions about the thickness of the coushins? You think15 cm would be too little?

I've been looking at cushions for a bay window seat and have been in discussion with a company called Safefoam.
I came across them first as them also make replacement cushions and covers for Ercol furniture.

make sure the cushions are thicker and more firm than your average cushions....also ,padding the plywood base before covering it with fabric will help in preventing it from slipping..

I measured our sofa cushions they're roughly 15cm ( kind of a bit squashed on the edges but fuller in the middle - they're leather )
