The book shelf!

Hi!
I have been looking for a tree-themed book shelf and yours is exactly what I'm hoping for! Where did you buy it from? I have been exploring sites and all of them cost a fortune! I hope this one is a reasonable price.

The tree book case was purchased from Nursery Works.

Well friends.....there's been some developments! I tried out the idea of having a peninsula by moving my existing freestanding unit to the end of the run next to the bin. Although it is bigger than the small peninsula I was proposing I was interested to see how easy it was to live with. The answer is it wasn't! The ovens being the other side of it meant I had to dash round it to check things in the oven, turn the timer off, etc and I couldn't picture myself doing that all the time. (I do a lot of cooking.) Sadly I don't think at the minute we are up for a major reshuffle of units and ovens and I can't decide what we would do about the boiler unit as its right in the way of that end run. So.....back to original layout!

Thanks for your help Minnie and Misha, you are kind! Laura Ashley has a big mirror that might be ok ? Constance? can't add the image... We have shelves on the TV wall opposite the sofa - see photo. We have one more box to go above TV which is still drying! Not as deep as the speaker shelves but same height. I need to swap/spread the books around too to mix the colours over the sea print. (I have sent so many to the charity shop) I think you are right, there is no real need of shelf above radiator if we go for big and round mirror. It would be quite a strong design but is hopefully balanced by the TV cabinet etc. My first thought was for a round mirror near the lamp on the TV cupboard but husband complains he will be looking at himself all night. So there is a gap I had not planned. Not sure what to put there? Any ideas? Thanks so much for your help.

Thanks for the ideas. I am keen to paint but not quite yet. Planning a mirror above the fire but all the ones I like are out of stock! I was going to go for a round one? I've ordered a mid century bookcase to put against the left of the patio door wall but I'm going to see how it looks in the space and it might have to go in the dining room. I've ordered some funky art prints for above the couch. I'm trying to stick with mustard, powdery pink and bluey grey tones as those are the colours I have in various items in the room already. I think I just feel like it's a bit empty. I might wait until the things I've ordered arrive and take it from there. The window above the couch I could make into shelves, I'll give that some thought! I feel a bit disappointed I can't use the alcoves. Husband is dead against TV on wall so that's a no go. Could possibly add shelves above built in unit on the other side of the fire?

If this is a terraced Victorian or early Edwardian house, what you’re seeing is pretty typical - as someone else has pointed out above, the reason this fireplace looks off centre is almost certainly that the flue for the fireplace in the room below it runs to the left. If you’re using the fireplace below, do NOT knock into this one just to see what’s there - you could end up cracking the lining and causing smoke to come through. If you’re not using the fireplace below, you have much more options: the cheapest is to close off the right of the fireplace so that the remaining gap is centred; you could also fit a load bearing lintel and extend to the left. I’m with Cacoona though - asymmetry can be a nice feature
