In our new house these 2 rooms link - so kitchen diner. Our plan is to have the rest of downstairs layed with wooden flooring but wooden floors in kitchen? Needs something different in kitchen as it's vinyl these are the brochure pics as not yet moved in yet but I'm finding the planning of renovation exciting!

I am a big fan of natural wood flooring. Having it in both the kitchen and dining space will make the entire space look more spacious as the rooms won't be so defined.

You could consider using engineered wood. It is made of a top layer of natural hardwood laminated with layers of plywood to give it better durability. It also doesn't expand and contract so much which makes it more suitable for kitchens.

Most flooring suppliers have great options for engineered flooring.

You can put a wood floor in a kitchen but I think you would prefer something like Amtico or Karndean

Porcelain is a tough tile which will not crack or break easily. they are very long lasting. vinyl is out dated and just doesn't look good. Your other option should be ceramic tiles. So it should be between ceramic and porcelain. I'd still recommend porcelain but ceramic is cheaper, that's the biggest advantage of ceramic. I bought these porcelain tiles two weeks ago, they look lovely. beautiful hexagon porcelain tiles

Thanks for the link which has help us understand this product is part of IDS' collection, This means they import the product from somewhere and re-brand it under their own name/label, in this case, as "Malmo" We still do not know, unfortunately, which product they have re-branded but IDS are a reputable UK-wide company and their LVT will probably be a good product. If considering wood you could get unfinished wood installed. Companies such as Wood Floor Accessories are a great supplier. Having it finished on site means a finish can be picked that works for your home. Each home has variables such as pets, different traffic and the owners desire to maintain the flooring or aversion to maintenance. Having wood finished on site has advantages. You can pick the highest quality product that works for your budget. The range of finishes available is quite wide. A professional company will try to understand your home and recommend the appropriate finish. They will also understand how easily the finish was can be renovated in the future. Amtico is an extremely robust product but being plastic, is just plastic flooring. It has its place, as does wood. In areas that have plenty of light surfaces, scratches show very easily on Amtico, Karndean etc. The manufacturers push a polishing maintenance product on consumers. However, this needs to be stripped and reapplied on a regular basis.

I prefer not to lay wood flooring In the kitchen but would recommend porcelain wood effect tiles or LVT such as karndean or Amtico if you are wanting to continue the wood effect aesthetic.

Tiles are good in terms of durability but very cold to the touch and therefore much more ideal if you have UFH although. LVT on the other hand is much more warmer to the touch and just requires great care whilst laying to prevent it from lifting if it comes in contact with water..

Thank you. What is ugh and lvt? I was looking at ceramic wood effect tiles but I'm not sure the ones I have seen are very realistic.

LVT- luxury vinyl tiles, amtico and karndean are the renowned brands. They are highly durable and come in various style, mostly stone effect and woodeffect. If laid properly, the comparison is given to shop flooring which has high amounts of traffic and yet survives.

UFH - underfloor heating. Tiles are very cold to the touch and unless you are walking around with shoes/slippers, Id say it is very cold without underfloor heating.

I prefer porcelain tiles to ceramic as I find ceramic are more prone to cracking. You also get more realistic wood impressions.

Are you keeping the kitchen and just changing the flooring? If so, that should be your starting point in terms of colour, tone and warmth.

Yes keeping the kitchen as sellers say it's only been in 6mths so low on priority list.

I would live in it for a few weeks before making any decisions as you need to see how the light works first. As the kitchen is black and white (2 extremes tonally) there is no question that wood would give it warmth and bridge the gap between these two extremes. I had engineered wood in my last kitchen (which I inherited) and it was fine. Looking at the first image, I would be tempted to remove the upper cupboards and tiling and add some timber open shelving for added texture and warmth.

It's not a big kitchen so would need to leave the cupboards for storage. Might need to hang some utensils as downsizing from current kitchen.

Hi Maureen, it's common for our customers to worry about laying wood flooring in a kitchen but we always try to reassure that it's perfectly practical. It's important to clean up spills quickly in any room where a wood floor is laid, and the same goes for the kitchen. The only difference is that there might be more spills to take care of more often. It's just important to make sure that the floor is dried if it gets wet and rugs can be placed by sinks, ovens and outside doors to help protect your floor. The beautiful effect of having a wood floor fitted throughout the whole of your downstairs is worth it :). Also just for future reference... if you ever want to change the look/colour of your kitchen in the future, whether it will be in the next 10 years or 100 you have the option of sanding your floor down and staining it to a preferred colour that would match the new decor.
