grotty one bed transformed to light, modern two bedroom apartment

we were asked to transform a grotty one bedroom flat in an Grade Two Listed building. The space was tight at approximately 55sqm. We found space for an extra bedroom and an elegant bathroom. Light colours and classic materials were used to create a feeling of warmth and calm. We hope you like it.

What a lovely use of space, although for my personally the sink on the end of a run doesn't work quite so well (but this may well work for the owner; just a personal opinion.) and will look even better once the owners inject some personality and their own style into the property.

Can I ask what was used for the kitchen splashback? Would love to create a marble effect splashback for the future!

Absolutely love the herringbone flooring and the under cabinet lighting in the kitchen area, a great redesign of the space.

My first thought is that the bed looks a little close to the furniture across from the foot of it. I might try the bed on the window wall and instead of the piece on the wall that has the door, eliminate it and get two bedside table pieces with storage to accommodate whatever you were going to store in the piece across from the foot of the bed in your plan. I like beige and gray schemes in the bedroom too, and find some live green plants add a perfect spot of color, or perhaps a kind of acid green silk texture throw pillow. My suggestion is to browse Houzz photos and save the color schemes that you really love! Adding something sparkly will pep up a design that you think is too monochromatic as well - some silver or crystal bling? I added some bling-y chandeliers on either side of the bed in one of my bedrooms, which is fairly monochromatic in beige and gray tones. Some of the throw pillows also have a silvery touch in them.

Hi, in that space I would put a nice relaxing framed print and beneath it a shaker style shelf with pegs to hang pretty scarves or hats or bags. I have one in my utility room between two cupboards and it gives a lovely feel to the room as well as being useful. Mirrors are not good feng shui opposite a bed and although shoe storage is great it might be too much between the wardrobes. Pretty colours!

Your bed is in the best position for keeping all your furniture and getting out of the bed comfortably on both sides. I would recommend that you change the headboard to one much larger that makes a statement. Judging from your prints, you like colour and modern, so try a headboard like the screen idea below. It is bold and colourful and looks great against white walls. (Old doors mounted horizontally work well too). Choose a colour that works well with your natural oak furniture (yellow will not). A contrasting colours are opposites on a colour wheel, so if you were to choose something like the teal , a terracotta or lime green would contrast well with it. Soft furnishings like cushions and a throw would bring more colour into your room. To save money, retain the plisse blinds on the window but add a Roman blind to drop down at night as blackout. Bigger lamps with quirky bases would add interest and throw better light. Using a rug, as you have, makes the room appear smaller. If you want warmth when you step out of bed, smaller rugs, one each side, can add colour but leave more of the wood floor exposed.

I would use what is now the bedroom, as a dining room next to the kitchen and then make what is now the lounge into a bed sitting room. Even better if you can sub divide it into two parts with a wall or part wall, but if not, how about a sofa bed or a daybed that transforms at night? Is this an apartment or a house? Having the dining area next to the kitchen makes so much more sense, as does having the bedroom next to the bathroom. There are some very creative arrangements for bed that hide by day nowadays, including fitting into cupboards etc - these look contemporary rather than the old fashioned bed sitting rooms and will make the space much more usable by day as well.
