How to use space under stairs

I am wondering what to do with this space under the stairs. It looks so empty and uninviting. Anyone have any ideas? There used to be a built in cupboard there, but I took that out as there was mold behind it. I don't really need more storage anyway. So what to do with the space?
I just put the chair there to give you an idea of the size of the space.
I am also thinking of painting the stairs a different color, so any suggestions there are also welcome.

6 years agoI see an external door, why not make a boot room sort of area with some bench seating.

Comments (6)Space under stairs goes well with a few angled to fit cabinets with doors under the lower parts of the stairs and where it approaches person height, can become closet. Some cubbys under the lowest third to swallow shoes, galoshes, folded umbrellas, etc... mid section might have drawers to store sweaters, mittens, caps, that need to be stored until weather dictates; and the tallest third as closet to eat the coats. Comments (26)Well, i was serious about the fairy garden, not joking, sometimes, people have to respect the ones commenting too. It is indoors, what i was seeing kept looking like out of doors. the pond is nice enough, does it have a fountain? It really looks like it would be hard to care for? in such an area, you could have great control and grow something like orchids? Other wise how about either an exhibition space for glass vases or sculpture, good lighting wonderful colors or prism effect of cut crystal or statuary. if you stick with the pond, i would definitely do a fountain, that would help keep it clean. once again could provide for some lovely water loving and shade loving plants....See MoreHow to maximise storage in an under stairs cupboard.
Comments (10)How come everyone elses stairs lead onto the kitchen so makes a great pantry...an obvious solution. Mine will be a hobby room and crafts storage. The question doesnt mean a lot without without plans or purpose, eg. mine was originally going to have a fish tank built into it as faces to the back of the living room.... Comments (6)I would say partially block it in, like the picture above so that the coats and shoes are in cupboards then “go glam” put a shiny chrome radiator on the wall in place of the old white one, or get bespoke mirrors made for the remaining wall and ceiling, the amount of light it bounces round is amazing and the moment you put two mirrors touching each other at different angles it makes it all look so much bigger as the mirrors reflect into each other. Can you change the flooring in your hallway for something brighter? B&Q do an inexpensive range of Dolce walnut laminate, £17 per meter, it’s gloss but not slippery and is really hard wearing, the grain is interesting and the colour is lovely and warm and welcoming...See Morenessyquinche

I'd definitely paint the stairs - they look a little too utilitarian at the moment - maybe a very light grey or the same as the walls surrounding so they blend in a little more?
I love understairs spaces - they can be made into very cosy little nooks - I've posted some ideas below...

some more ideas to consider:
- a open office space/work station
- a reading nook with seating such as a couch/bean bags and book shelves
- a kids hangout, if you have children.
- or the area can be used for additional shoe storage
- or serve no real purpose but a decorative feature using open shelving, large free standing mirror, large plant pot and vases.
