Exterior Renovation - windows/paints/railing etc..

We have just bought this property in Switzerland it's from the 1970s and needs a complete facelift/renovation. What kind of Windows should we go for? Plain ones or French ones? Would have loved to get aluminium but weather is too cold here so that's not an option. Also what color should we go for the facade? Thanks much x

I think it depends on how far you are going with the renovation.
If you are remodeling inside you should check you are happy with the position of the windows. If you are then mindful to change the location of the windows you might change the shape of the wide picture windows as these probably are the thing that roots this house in the 70's. With some deeper less wide windows this house could be transformed.
In the U.K. changes to the facade require permission so you must also check what is possible.

I'm loving all the advice, suggestions and photos. Thanks everyone! Finding it really helpful. The ceiling must remain white because I don't want to have to paint it again. Hellish job! I really like the idea of painting the rail and skirting boards the same as the wall. Would I use eggshell for the skirtings or a matt varnish over emulsion? Suppose either would do the job? Like the idea of using a lighter shade of the wall colour above the rail. I think the white scheme looks super smart, but I might try the colour and see how it looks. Using colour in that space really appeals to me. The wallpaper idea has worked well in our bedroom, it makes the room feel cosy and personal. But, it might be too much for our lounge, which is a much bigger room with a lot going on already. The lounge window faces east so very light at one end, and very dark at the other. It's a cool room during the day, but cosy in the evening with fire lit. If using the wallpaper idea, give some careful thought to your choice of pattern. The size and repeat. It's got to work in a very short area. Would love to see pics if anyone does it though!

Quick update: The three bedrooms and landing were spray painted. Not entirely convinced it saved labour and have to factor in purchase of spray painter and used double the amount of emulsion. Plus felt guilty not using my regular decorator :( We have now started work downstairs. At the rear of the house (see plan posted previously) was a bedroom and dining room. Decided to take out the wall between the two to make the two rooms into open plan kitchen/ diner. Unfortunately the ceiling came down when the wall was taken out so additional work required to rebuild and plaster. When renovating always expect the unexpected! Although it cost several extra days in labour to make good, there was a saving in electricians time as he didn't have to scrabble around in the roof void to fit the new wiring! Ceiling and all walls in new room have been plastered and kitchen units fitted. Really pleased with the Dove Grey Shaker units with copper handles from Howdens. Had the cupboard handles fitted horizontally so they can line up with the handle on the integrated dishwasher (still to be installed) as well as the drawer handles. Dithered about a gas hob as I think people prefer (?) but went for an induction hob in the end as sits level with the worktop also thought safer as hob had to be sited into the breakfast bar. A lovely wooden beam (over hob) had been boxed in so we have pulled off the old plaster- it will be sanded down eventually. Next job; stripping out the old kitchen at the front of the house......

Pressure washing isn’t an expensive job but before you use anything too abrasive to get paint off bricks you could try that. The odd splash of paint on the bricks might scrape off too. It would be good to remove loose paint on the bay before the decorators (although protect your lovely new windows when you do it). It will also highlight if you need any repointing. I can’t see the crumbling stone on the bay on my screen, my feeling is you need to remove some of the paint to work out what you are dealing with. I suspect what you think is crumbling stone is actually blistering paint and poor historical repairs. Most likely a decorator can get you a good finish- after all most good decorators pride themselves on the quality of preparation. Stone that is has worn or crumbled can be built back up with a render but a good stone paint is designed to hide imperfections so render may not be necessary.

Likely going to come down to your personal preference. We brought a 70’s mid terrace, standard height rooms (IMO) and they had put up picture rails. Personally I wouldn’t have done but for the way we have recently decorated it, it actually adds height to the room, which I think is down to a trick of the eye, so they have grown on me. Just keep in mind if you put them up you may struggle to get them off if you change your mind down the line without having the risk of needing to replaster.
