Bungalow Reconfiguration. Advice/Ideas please.
Comments (10)Thank you for your comments and suggestions. Very much appreciated. Appologies for the poor quality drawing. I thought it would be a bit clearer than that. I'm not very good technically! You are right JenP, when the extension was added they moved the window to the back and made it into interconnecting bedrooms as they had a disabled child. So that room now has no window. The bathroom window is also facing into the extension. Not ideal but we thought we could install a light catcher in the roof and reduce the size of the window by installing some opaque glass blocks to borrow some light from the extension. The current lounge was actually two rooms when built, the one on the left with the bay window was the lounge as it has a fireplace with back boiler and the other a bedroom. We were thinking the same about making the lounge into two bedrooms so that we have our living areas at the back. Seems logical. We do like your idea JenP of the U shape living area that seems do able but the issue we have with the rear of the bungalow is the very limited space. We had considered maybe knocking down the excisting non matching extensions and rebuilding it a bit larger but that maybe to costly. We have a couple of local builders lined up to give us quotes but we are still undecided as to what is our best option. Kiwimills..yes, we are lucky to have Ikea and I can't wait to be able to go shopping. Thanks again Debbie...See MoreBoiler in Loft access /positioning guidelines/regd
Comments (14)Thanks for that.Well its all changed again.Gas registered plumber came round yesterday.Said boiler does need moving for several reasons, another being he said my flu vents too close to next door, they got loft conversion too and their velux is near my flu.Think their conversion done before my boiler fitted. So latest is its gonna have to be moved down to 1st floor into new bedroom which is an extension abive the kitchen as the flu can go out through that roof.So lot more pipe work , he says he happy to sign off .My Dads going over today and will check plumbers ok with extra work involved. And yes I gone from a one bed terraced cottage which has been gutted,to a 3 bedroom involving totally knocking down kitchen in back, rebuilding it,building a bedroom above it,and 3rd bedroom in loft.Boiler was already in loft.Lots of plastering been done already,so I no this is gonna be time consuming costly and involve some replastering but my new kitchen cant be fitted and I cant mive back in till its done And yes never done anything like this before, its grand designs on pauper scale. One step forward and two back I will put some pics up when done....See MoreHow to process? Who we should hire? Teach us!
Comments (2)I think you need a good quality general builder. Try to find one with several guys on the workforce so that there is a broad range of experience but you only have to deal with one person. I would get more than one firm around and look for local recommendations to help decide. The carport may require planning permission so seek the advice of your planning department at the local Borough Council. If your conservatory has a glass or polycarbonate roof it may not be thermally efficient to open it to the house. It may be better to keep doors to it from the main house or you could rebuild it to a higher standard. You should source the bifold door with the agreement of the builder that they are the correct size. Make sure you plan well and they arrive when the builder needs them. You should choose your own engineered wood floor and have the builder lay it. Best of luck...See MoreKitchen lean to extension, interior walls removed, outside WC convert
Comments (43)I can imagine you must be demoralised because you can’t afford what you were dreaming of but I have got to say I get excited about this kind of house, it’s amazing high ceilings and finding one at an end so the garden is not shaded is brilliant. I think you could have a beautiful space if you put bifold doors between the kitchen and the lean to, raise the floor in the lean to so it’s the same height as the kitchen and have the same flooring for a feeling of continuity. The bifolds satisfy building regs as you don’t need to rebuild the lean to, you have a dining space for all but the coldest days and when it is cold you just close the bifold doors....See MoreEdwards Renovations Pty Ltd
