How to arrange and utilize the rectangular shape living room

We would like to use our big rectangular shape living room as a family room also for kids to play and study. We need to arrange all the furnitures like TV, sofas, big office study table and chairs, Piano, bookshelves etc. find it difficult to section them. Please anyone has any clever ideas?? Many thanks.

Have you got a floor plan or rough dimensions of the room, with door and window positions?

I would split the room into 2 by having a sofa width ways across it. Leaving room to walk past obviously. Sofa and TV in one zone, study area in the other zone

Yes, it's a complete nightmare! Thank you both for replying. We have tried dividing the room with the large sofa, where the smaller armchair is, and the TV used to be on the patterned wall. The smaller armchair went where the TV is. Whatvwe found was that there wasn't much space between the two chairs to get in and out of the kitchen - the chairs are both very deep so they really come into the room . when the chair was where the TV is I always felt like I was missing something that was going on behind me - that sounds silly, I know!! I love the idea of zoning with a rug and a coffee table would be so handy - currently we have to twist right round to reach the tables on either side of the sofa. If you'd have a writing desk where the TV currently is, what would you do with the armchair? At the moment it feels like there are two chunks of wasted space on either side of the big sofa. Yes, yes, yes to the yellow and grey! I love your photos, and it would really lift the dark wallpaper. I bought the cushions for Christmas 2015 and didn't change them afterwards, so a fresh look is long overdue! Thank you again for your ideas, feel free to throw more suggestions around - I'll try anything!

In your kitchen plan the space between the wall run and the island is massive - maybe 1.3 or 1.4m? It should be more like 1m otherwise you will find the two surfaces are inconveniently far apart. That also means there is more space for a dining table than it looks like from your plans. Do you have a cellar? If not then the understairs space is available for a WC, you might need to carve a small corner out of the kitchen to add to the understairs space depending on its size. Or if you do have a cellar the wc can go where Jonathan has put it (entrance can be from the understairs area if you have the height, or from the kitchen if not). Is there somewhere upstairs you could put a laundry room/area? In or near a bathroom perhaps?

Hi Jamie, I think I would be inclined to move the pink sofa so that it faces the corner sofa to create a more cohesive space and one which feels more connected. A large rectangular rug would centre the space and connect the two seating areas. You could put an arm chair in the window area or have a large feature house plant or a small table and a couple of chairs? Have you thought about removing the wall to create a larger lounge? You could still have the corner sofa here which will create a zoned area, but it would feel more open plan. If this is not an option, how about using this space as an office area, which incorporates lots of storage?

If you have some left you could test it out in the living room too. It would be a nice continuation. Chic Shadow could work too, but to me it looks a bit dark and somehow when I look at Chic Shadow and Sapphire Salute together, I'm not feeling it. But it might be different in real life.
