What seating arrangement for our living room?
Comments (4)How about swapping the rooms around. Move the TV room where your office/ library is now and build your library shelving around the walls in this other room. That room has more 'uninterrupted' walls (although I can't see how low the windows are) so it's easier to arrange the sofas. You can customise the bookshelves to fit the middle room, can already use the built-ins around the window, etc. (I'd suggest to include radiator masks matching the wood/ paint of the shelves). You then wouldn't have to get rid of the fireplace surround. And if you fix it and place an old leather armchair next to it, you could build a fire and cosy up with a book till late March! Or you can hang a retractable screen above the opening between the rooms and buy a projector - ta da! your own cinema room!...See MoreFurnishing our kitchen/living area
Comments (9)Hello Sean, Congratulations on your new home! One thing to decide is where do you want to go in terms of style... You have the beginnings of two looks here... One could be dramatic and moody with the painting... The other is light and more neutral.. So sticking to what you have said you'd like.. You could paint the rear wall in something like Juniper Ash from Little Greene, replace the sofa or add dark layers to blend it with a darker wall. Look at colours here and texture...Beautiful cushions.. . For the other walls another Little Greene colour that would be nice is Arquerite. Replacing the curtains to compliment the wall colour (lighter) would add to this and rug too but something bigger as current one is too small.. It doesn't want to define the space by contrasting so much with the floor... and for this I would suggest the light colour for inspiration.. Try some tester pots.. Paint onto sheets of paper and have a look at different times of the day... Consider painting the doors and architrave... If you have UPVC then you can buy plastic primer and then paint the colour you like that would compliment these.. Usually for wood it would be an eggshell.. Then have a look at the lighting... Pendant in complimentary colours... For the dining table, consider something with a glass sheet table top... You can buy the table as a whole or legs and have a top made. There are also extendable glass tables... As there is not a lot of room to play with here, it would be nice to have something that isn't solid... This then gives you the idea of more room... What about an arrangement of transparent chairs.. For limited space areas these can be fantastic.. Functional but discreet... Create a beautiful table arrangement of flowers and or a glass centrepiece... Then onto the kitchen... you may be able to add some of the colour scheme in this area too... Cupboards? Matt paint, walls, maybe a collection of inky hued cups and cutlery... : ))...See MoreCurtains or blinds in an open plan kitchen/seating area?
Comments (9)Hi Hilary, Why not consider motorised blinds? They are not as expensive as they used to be and now you even get wireless battery operated ones and even solar powered ones which have a 5 year battery life. I considered them for my parents house a while back and the only reason I didn't go ahead was because of other renovation work which is still due. Some come with dawn to dusk timers and can be controlled via your phone even while your away....See MorePatio / Outdoor Seating + Kitchen area design ideas/critique
Comments (2)Hi Jonathan - thanks! Unfortunately for height reasons I can't put a pergola up. Neighbours won't like it as our patio will already be 30cm above the lawn. On the height of the surfaces, I wonder if I ought to just accept a higher worktop height. This will block the view of the garden a bit, but with a BBQ and maybe pizza oven in the kitchen area, the height will unavoidably be higher then the walls anyway. So a higher wall perhaps isn't a problem (and would look tidier when viewed from the garden anyway). Do you have any specific thoughts on the lighting options? Seems like an infinite set if options. I made the model in Sketchup with a plugin called vray. . Borrowed a friend's machine to do it.. I'm not sure I've got a great render from vray, but it was the default settings. Plenty of YouTube tutorials.if.interested, I'm no expert at all. Thanks...See MoreH T
