Formal sitting room

Help please we are decorating our sandstone villa and need some inspiration please for the formal living area it’s a good size and has a marble mantle in place with a dado rail plus looking to keep flooring as is . What would look good? Still to purchase a new suite so totally open to all ideas! thanks in advance

Hi. You don't really have any photos in your ideabook in terms of what styles, colours you like etc. Which way does the room face? I can also see from your other post that you have young children! Will they be using this room or is it adults only? Do you have any other existing furniture that will be going in the room? Will you have a tv in here? How many do you want to seat? If you could give a bit more detail it will help

Front room for me! we have three rooms opened into one large living space, this is great when you have a large family. I still say front room, but mainly to describe the location of say my book or glasses if I'm am asking somebody to fetch them for me. It makes for a quicker find :)

Hi Claire, When you’re looking at concept planners or interior designers I would begin by looking at a selection of people. It’s important that you find someone who you get on with (that are on the same page as you from the start), as the entire process goes on for quite some time and you go through a lot with this person. It’s also important to get a few quotes and make sure you get lists of what you get for your money - as almost every pro does things slightly differently. They should all start, as Jonathon mentions above, with an in depth at your requirements and needs for the space as well as the property itself. Having all this information means we can then tailor a layout specifically to you and how you’re going to use the space. I personally begin by offering 3-4 different layout options with pros and cons. This gives you lots of choice and helps you to think about the space and to analyse it more clearly. I hope this helps. I really like it! Looks very comfy, well done! I love the mirror but in my opinion you should create an asymmetry by putting different furnitures and the sofas take visually lots of place so maybe you should but a small table instead of this black furniture.

Hi yes three young children under 5 but this will be adults on room we have a family room separate. North facing room. No furniture as yet for this room and still to purchase a tv too to seat 6 people I think.

We decorated last year our other house and went for geometric deep maroon and champagne paper with velvet curtains but as this room is totally new and a blank canvas I wanted a fresh outlook. TIA

Hi, it's hard without knowing what you like! Option 1.. mid century with a slight industrial feel. 1st pic is just general scheme, a pale but warm stone on the walls. I would also go for similar curtains with a pelmet for an elegant look. 2nd pic is sofas. 4th pic is floor lamp. 6th pic is actually a media cabinet. Would you consider removing the picture rail as it's low for a picture rail and high for a dado and limits you with art etc to make the most of the proportions? If so, I'd look at a tall antiqued tiled mirror over the fire. I'd also add a tall potted palm which will bring in the Edwardian feel, as will the art nouveau inspired rug and the pink for the chair and a cushion or 2. Everything bar the mirror and coffee table are from westelm. I'd find a coffee table with a shelf underneath but can't find one ATM! It might look good with books on the shelf and then add a tray with decanter, glasses etc for the top with a vase of flowers etc. You can add more pattern and texture for cushions
