Living room finish opinions Before and nearly finished After

Hi I originally posted about redecorating front living room 10 months ago, and here is Before and after (well almost after, have not quite finished)

New white marble fireplace, New carpet is down (the colour is truffle) the walls are now grey, The accessories in my now picture are just something I am having a play with, I love the lamp and think it goes with the leather settee (I am keeping the sofa for a few years as only bought it couple of years ago, Cushions I think a lot of whiteish colours with geometric patterns. What are your opinions? How can I finish the room off?

I am also stuck on new ceiling lights, I have searched and searched and can not find anything I like, and not sure what style to choose

The room looks good. I think the round FC mirror would work really well. As you've chosen industrial items I'd stick with that and a slight mix of mid century as I love the light Carolina chose, rockett st George and westelm also do similar ones. I'm not sure of the room/alcove dimensions but I'd add a marble console table. Rather than geometrics I'd look at these cushions from FC (2 on right ) and team with a light grey sheepskin. Art for over the sofa (as it's abstract it looks good hung the other way too!). I would also bring in wood for a coffee table, I couldn't decide which one but they're all from westelm! Then just add plant, stems, table lamp etc

Great job you've done! The room looks so fresh and calm. John Lewis does some fantastic geometric cushions, like below. I would also put some pictures on the walls and a mirror above the fireplace.

Thank you Mare yes the room does feel very calming, although not quite finished. Round mirror is exactly what i am looking for but maybe bit bigger about 90cm
Cushions thankyou will have a look.
I have just ordered the floor lamp so hopefully will love it when it arrives.

Before you start adding lots of color, start with one. Clearly you like the navy and that goes very well with the grey. Start with that. If you start adding color all over the place you're going to go from your monochromatic look to a much more difficult scheme to maintain so that it still gives off that glamorous, understated look you seem to be inclined to. An easy way to see if you like all the extra color is to purchase some inexpensive fabric or paper in the color you're considering. Cut it up and place it over pillows, vases, books, etc and stand back. Do you like the extra color or don't you? Move forward from that. Your book case. I disagree. I think it connects your fireplace to the rest of the room. I think each room needs a little dark furniture in it somewhere. Beautiful wood is something to me enjoyed, not painted over. You may simply need to move it further from the fireplace to even things out. I agree with the mirror. Something with sharper edges is going to enhance your fireplace and keep in line with the sharper edges of your furniture. I have a couple of other mirrors you may like but I'm having trouble attaching them. I'll give it another go.

I clicked on the company that did this work and they have clearly done some amazing things on other projects. However, I do share the reservations about this one. The symmetry and balance has been lost by exposing the eave and the solid fronted cabinets prevent books or anything personal from being displayed. Great use of colour to make a statement but I would use it as an accessory colour away from the kitchen. having said that, it is interesting to read that the kitchen was hand painted to match the wall colour and not the other way round! it's all about personal taste so if owners love it then that's all that matters. Bravo for use of the bar-like cabinet for glasses, this gives the feel of a bar and it is very trendy. We're seeing more of this around homes. The worktop is FANTASTIC.

Yes, I forgot to mention that I love the floor lamp. Where did you find it? Re ceiling lights, I'm in the same boat as you in that I can't find anything I like. Jim Lawrence has some gorgeous pendants, but they're expensive. I also like Castlegate lighting.

The floor lamp is from Nkuko, there is 20% off with a first order. Its so difficult to find ceiling lights that are reasonably priced and look good. As for cushions the one in my after image is lovely but its £80ish pounds! I couldn’t justify paying that for a cushion ... so cushion hunting continues

Thanks, I will check out Nkuko. Wayfair has lots of lights and cushions, more affordably priced. I'm with you on not being able to justify £80 for a cushion! I've been coming across lots of end of season sales recently. Oh, one other thing is that I've found lots of sources from the back of magazines like homes and Gardens, and also the Houzz website.

I would consider putting some shelves in the alcove, that way you can add some personal items to bring some things you love into the room. Depending on budget you could get a carpenter in, or buy some ready made shelves and fit them yourself.

I would definitely look at bringing some warmer tones into the room, brass is very on trend right now. Perhaps a mirror or artwork above the fireplace?

And I like the potted plant you've added in, they bring life to any space and are invaluable.

Lastly, just remember that a room is built over time, with items that reflect your life, so don't be afraid to add bits here and there, rather than going out and buying a load of things for the sake of it, or to match a specific colour theme.

Thank you Munchkino you are right about taking time to buy things, its very tempting to do a shopping sweep and end up buying things we don’t want, just because we want them right now! I have done this in past and learning lessons.

Have been searching for large plain round mirror for ages but none tick my boxes. The search continues. French connection do a nice large round one, but shall wait until it’s reduced.

Plant yes i will definitely have plant there in big planter.

I am liking minimalistic look, feels fresh and spacious. The carpet has made a massive difference to room, so much warmer and cosy.

Love the wall art pics. I did think a nice big wall art would look great above fireplace thankyou. Will have to persuade my other half as he wanted mirror. Thanks Celerygirl

You could have both. Wall art above the sofa and a mirror above the fireplace. That way your mirror will reflect the art and you'll see it when sitting on the sofa.

Minnie I love those lights Carolina chose, and they would look perfect, unfortunately my other half doesn't like them. He has no idea on style hee hee. I am gutted, he would hate them if I got them, and it just wouldn't be worth it. So I have gone for these..... they probably do not match at all. I originally liked this light, but I am not sure it is all going to go together. The chandelier is large and oval. Can you mix Industrial with glam chandelier.

The marble console table is beautiful. I love marble, I will see what size it is and maybe use it as a desk instead, as have no room for console table. Love artwork you mentioned. Love the fur throw. Cushions I am not sure on. Thank you for your input.

Oh that's a shame, better to have a happy partner than a living room light though (most of the time anyway!). I think you can mix lux with industrial. Have you put up the light? Just wondering how one with a black shade would work? A change of cushions for a more lux feel with velvet etc and if you love marble then a marble and brass coffee table perhaps? How wide is that alcove?

And another thing is that it would be nice to have a colour repeated around the room. I love the green cushion that you've picked, and it ties in with the plant. Why don't you keep to green, brown (blinds) and grey colour scheme?

I’m cushion crazy! Which if any are your favorite cushion colour combination. I like so many cushions, but more i play with them the more i agree Carolina, greens are warmer

I have gone for these cushions in the end. Cushionmania is over! Who would have thought it would be so difficult to choose cushions. I have gone for greens, mauve and industrial blue colours.

Yes happy with them for now Carolina. Cushions are easy to change and i have learnt you can create so many different looks and styles just by changing cushions. I am sure my local cushion shop will be pleased to see me again when i get bored with them.

I took cushions back and have gone for dark green velvet! It goes so much better with the grey room, industrial lamp and leather sofa.

Ha! Yes, you are right. Grey, green and brown, lovely together :-) And the fabrics are better too. The other ones were a bit too much of the fur maybe. Although I did like those soft colours too.

But yes, I do prefer these!
