Bi-fold dilemma

Hi,

we are in the process of redesigning our kitchen diner and can't decide whether to have the new bi-folds in white or anthracite grey.

We want the outside of the door to be white to match the rest of the glazing on the back of the house but the inside will be so white (white kitchen, light walls etc) I'd also like an upright radiator in anthracite to break up the white and think the bi-folds would look better in the same colour.

Does anyone know if it's possible to have the bi-folds white on the outside and anthracite grey on the inside? If so is it much more expensive?

Hi

Aluminium bi-fold windows tend to be powder coated for a durable, long lasting finish. It is most economic to apply the finish to the whole frame so the same colour is on both sides.

Changing the colour on the inside will cost more. The most cost effective way to do this might be to have the frames sprayed (over the powder coat finish) However this finish will not be as durable and resilient to scratching as the powder coat and as such may require touching up over time - this could be an issue and require the removal of the doors. Also it is worth considering how painting the doors affects any warranties that come with the doors.

As a result of the cost and complications, it is normal for bi-folds to be in a single, factory finished colour.

Hi yes we do a lots of bifolds in dual colours.

Excellent. Thanks for the visual. Always helps as builders are only at the foundation stage at the moment! 28m3 of concrete pumped on the site last week as our house built on higher ground so extension has to match ground level and we're adding a first level extension too. A long way to go but take each day at a time. No more projects for you then?!

Hi! I totally know what you mean about all the decision making. I’m constantly on here because I just can’t face making decisions anymore - there are too many of them. Ha ha. Ok so doors- I think it would bug you if you are used to going out via the kitchen and can’t do. Taking rubbish out etc etc back and forth. Bifold - yes I’m a set of 3 you could have the door opening on its own. Usually it would open to the left ie against the middle one then if you wanted to open all of them you just slide them over. Ideal config would be a traffic door opening to the right and a set of 2 bifolds opening to the right (so they would stack to the kitchen end. But I don’t know if that is possible or not but worth asking a supplier!

I’m getting an ultraline sliding door fitted in our new extension in a few weeks. 2.4 high x 4.4 wide. The frames are 20mm. It’s about £10k and I can’t remember off the top of my head whether that includes VAT (probably not unfortunately). But our number one goal with our extension is to connect our living space to our garden, so it feels right to prioritise budget for it. You don’t need a local company necessarily as national companies will have local agents who have product in their showrooms. This has been tricky over the last few months but we also looked at local friends’ houses last summer, where they had installed various different brands of sliders and bifolds, and were able to get a good feel for them from their gardens! sometimes its good to take a breath and really think about how you live - rather than all focus being on the plans, which can seem immovable. For example, I have a largely open plan ground floor but on the advice of my sister whose kids were older at the time, I kept a small snug living room that is separate and as my kids have grown up through teenage years that has been a saving grace - we can all go to separate places,! I dont have to listen to video games whilst cooking etc :) Does one person often watch tv and the other like to read? Where do hobbies take place? Would it be a simple solution to just turn that dining table round to make more space for those doors? If you like to entertain would you like to hide the mess inthe kitchen to be cleared up later? I for example insisted that I could close my kitchen off from the front room and hall (and stairwell) because one of my pet hates is cooking smells lingering everywhere! Also consider if the doors could be retro fitted - and l ive in the space for 9 months first to see if you really need/want them?

Hi,

You can definitely get dual colour bifold doors! Personally I would go for Anthracite inside and outside, your bifold door is like your front door - a feature product. There is no reason why it needs to match all of your other windows on the back of the house, it's good to stand out!
