Kitchen flooring: engineered wood into wood effect tiles or grey

Hi,

We are doing a complete house refurb and will be putting engineered wood flooring throughout except for kitchen /utility/shower room on the ground floor. I had planned on putting wood effect tiles down but now I think the change from engineered wood to wood effect will look odd. My plan B is a grey concrete effect tile in the kitchen areas.

Do people think the grey tiles will be too cold looking? The kitchen is black and white with copper trim and I had thought the wood effect tiles would make it look a bit warmer.

I have small children, a cat and a dog so I'm fixed on tiles for the kitchen, just not the colour and style.

I've uploaded some of the kitchen plan renders to give an idea of the style and a pic of current grey tile frontrunner.

Hi Colleen,

Your kitchen looks lovely!

With regards to using wood effect porcelain, it's really important to shop around, get samples and do your research - there are some really good wood effect tiles and equally, there are some really terrible ones! We sell an Italian wood effect porcelain, which is really realistic. The picture below shows it in our customer's home against the wood flooring in their hallway (cloakroom floor is Aged Oak Porcelain).

If you do fancy a change and something different to the wood, then I think a grey or concrete effect would work really well. Maybe something with a warmer undertone if you're worried about it being too cold. One of the below could work for you.

Hi Colleen,

I think concrete effect tiles are a better choice. If you worry about the final look being cold, don't! Concrete effect is neutral enough to combine well with warmer, even rustic styles. The devil is in the details so it depends on what accessories you'll choose and how you'll finish off the whole look. Just some quick examples:

(it's a backsplash, but imagine it on the floor:)

black white kitchen with concrete tiles + industrial finishes and accessories

(patterns could soften the concrete effect even more)

If you are still in doubt, consider light stone effect tiles or even marble:

There are so many different greys out there. If you avoid ones with a blue undertone and opt for slightly warmer grey it should be fine. I would personally go for a buff colour. Try Mandarin Stone.

Hi I'm in the process of buying a property which has wood effect tiles too in the kitchen and hall. I have opted to have Karndean flooring in my lounge which also opens up to the garden so I didn't want carpet. They come in many styles so maybe have a look at these? I have chosen one around £25per sq m which is the cheapest range. They are basically VInyl planks that get glued to your floor. Easy to clean and you don't have to worry about water warping the planks. Hope his helps

Yes, I think muttleyz is correct in saying it would be too cold in the bedroom unless you are planning to invest in under floor heating. It is definitely ideal for bathrooms and kitchens as it is very hardwearing. There are multiple options for what you need but first of all there are a few questions to ask. 1. What are you hoping to install the tiles on externally? 2. Do you need a grip finish (advisable with children or if there is chance for build up on the tiles) 3. Are you looking for a 10mm internal and 20mm external tile? It could work if the floor is much paler, as in the example below, but it’s tricky. I think a nice pale grey or pale beige floor would be less of a clash. Laminate comes in many styles, not just wood effect, so worth visiting some flooring stockists to have a look. Or how about LVT which is warmer underfoot and seems to be very popular? Our client layed Marmoleum ‘concrete’ floor in Liquid Clay used throughout her space, which could be similar to something you could create. Hi Colleen, we think that wood to tile would make a nice contrast - especially if the tile includes similar colours/tones to the wood. What shade of engineered wood are you thinking of having? Ashen tones would make a lovely complement to grey concrete.

I agree with most of the above suggestions, I believe the grey will work well in the space, the detailing you have chosen will definitely warm up the space.

Thanks Sophie, that last photo you posted is really helpful to get an idea of the final look. The tile sample I prefer is much like that. Can I ask about the risk of staining as a consequence of red wine spills/toddler bolognese wars on these grey floors?

You're welcome, I love that kitchen!

Porcelain is really hardwearing, so is a great flooring choice if you have a busy family home. Porcelain is fired at very high temperatures, which makes it very dense and a lot less porous than a ceramic tile, so it will be able to cope with the usual kitchen spills. As it has a low absorption rate, it is much less prone to staining. Depending on the porcelain as well, if you choose a particularly textured one, you can always give it a coat of sealer upon installation to help prevent staining.

I tested white porcelain with bright pink hair dye when I bought them for my kitchen and the dye just wiped off. In 7 years the white tiles have never stained. I've dropped a Le Crueset cast iron pan lid and the lid got damaged but not a mark on the tile. I've had some small chips at the edges when furniture has been moved over them but it is minimal damage and the furniture should have been lifted rather than scrapped across the floor. You can buy full bodied porcelain which where the colour of the tile is right throughout the whole tile and if you get chips, you should not see a variation in colour. I love porcelain and would not use ceramic after having it. The best place to go for it, is your local independent tile retailer, rather than the big stores like Topps and Tile Giant. Not all tilers are keen on fixing them it because they are harder to cut and drill than ceramics and they need diamond blades and bits which cost more. They are well worth the investment though.

I think you should really go for LVT because it´s warmer underfoot than porcelain. You can get LVT flooring from Gerflor that´s made for commercial use, so that means it´s really durable. My sister-in-law had Gerflor put in a few years back and it´s standing up really well to wear and tear. They also have a dog and kids. I believe she said she got it from this shop called Bricoflor. https://www.bricoflor.co.uk/
