We want to update the lighting in the hallways and stairs in a block o

It is a block of flats built in 1961 and one wall of the hallways over all four floors is dated (perhaps retro ?) and is grey and yellow small mosaic tiles . The handrail is also grey , made of rubberised material so cant be painted. Anyway with the other walls yellow and harsh central lights the over all effect is quite cold. Any suggestions for initially the lighting and or colours for the yellow walls would be appreciated.

An image of the space would be great help. I would suggest having staircase lighting which looks great, or wall lights in the hallway. Is there a particular style you like? I would love to help.

If you're committed to changing the staircase, I would definitely recommend putting in some decent practical storage. We have a fairly narrow hall and the old cupboard under the stairs was a nightmarish mess of shoes bags and other junk. As part of our house remodel / extension we had a loft conversion and therefore decided to change the whole staircase. There is a small cupboard on the left for shopping bags etc. But what has revolutionised the hall is the pull-out cupboards, one for shoes and one for coats. The bottom of the coat cupboard also has a well for hats and gloves etc. My boys just automatically put their shoes away now and I don't have coats hanging on the banister. The few long coats we have hang neatly on the coat hooks behind the front door, with room for guest coats. If you haven't committed yet to a new staircase, the final picture was just inspiration for a spruce up. Finally, the glass "banisters" are lovely, but all that goes through my head is "kids and fingerprints"!

Verdon is a lovely shade and will look great for the walls and the cabbage white will work well for ceilings and coving but it doesn't look as if you have a lot of natural light coming into the hallway so I would also then use this for the woodwork to keep the overall look light and bright. Some matching turquoise based rugs and stair runner that link to the wall colour would also harmonise the look and increase the feeling of space. With regard to the electric meter, what about building a bespoke cupboard around it? It will give you storage underneath and a place to pop a nice lamp or plant + a tray for those keys and pocket detritus that we all bring in with us and that ends up getting a bit lost around the house if we don't give it a home! Good luck with it, you are obviously having to work hard with all that wood to clean up!

This carpet (2nd pic) may work with both carpets. I'd go for a runner for the stairs again, I think alternative flooring may do bespoke runners so you could add a colour border for the stairs. Alternatively a sisal Boucle or herringbone would suit the style of the house. I think you need to pick up a few samples. I agree a mirror by your bedroom door And swap to Roman blinds. You could add a chair on the landing as a reading spot or a chest of drawers with a lamp to store paperwork etc. Paint colours maybe look at farrow and ball clunch or slipper satin. I don't think there any rules/regs that are that specific, sometimes which floor they must be on, but not specifically where on the ceiling, apart from sometimes manufacturers instructions about keeping certain distance from corners. At least that's my understanding but I'm not a pro. An electrician could advise and I suspect move it to the side, or along the hall between the existing and new lights.
