1960s exterior makeover

So... lovely 1960s villa. I’m keen to make the outside look a little nicer. The downstairs windows definitely need replacing, as does the front door. I’d like a porch and I’m not really a fan of the stonework on the left exterior although not wishing to repaint the cream or re-tile the roof. I’d be open to replacing all the windows in a different style if I knew what that should be! Any thoughts please?

I think that the reason why XAMIs house stands well is that the window frames are composed of similar sized units. Your house currently has a large central window with two smaller windows with fan lights in most apertures . In addition none of the apertures are particularly deep. Perhaps if it had four windows with the same sized frame it would appear smarter and the aperture appear deeper.
There seems to be a trend for simple, narrow framed grey aluminium windows but personally I think that they could make this house a little plain and you should make the windows a feature.
I would like to see white, taupe or sage green windows and if it were mine I might consider a cottage feel.

Do you want to be contemporary? Or more traditional
The roof line is good
How long do you want to stay in the house,
if 5 to 10 years plus I would go more traditional/classic with the window style

How much are you trying to add value and how much just make the exterior look better
How have you and are you decorating the interior?

Hi Rachel,

The team and I recently achieved planning for similarly tired looking property in North London, albeit older in style. It's currently under construction, but here is a 3d mock up of what it will look like in the end:

For the windows we went for a "Crittal" dark framed window look. Replaced the terracotta roof tiles with a more modern looking slate and removed the pebble dash and replaced it with white painted render. A few cosmetic changes to the exterior of a building can make a world of difference and increase the life of building both physically and aesthetically. Definitely worth doing!

Ha! an idea...one of our houses, the bungalow, is up for sale with Verity Frearson estate agents in harrogate & may give you an idea of what I have done to it. Its been up for sale for 3 weeks & we have 3 buyers in waiting (with houses to sell.) Its on their website & is 18 leadhall drive. When we bought it, it had upvc doors, & caravan windows at the front for privacy. At the back it had a utility room & a warren of little rooms with small windows commanding the best views of the south facing garden. The green in the bedroom photo isn't qyite as vile as it may look in the photo. If i did it again I would probably use steel/ aluminium windows at the back. I also love just one large picture window too. the doors internally, where they are not glass double doors, are the dordogne doors from Howdens which are very reasonable & add seem to suit many styles of houses rather than the usual panelled door. Mine are painted but they can be left wooden. we have another house, a victorian town house, but this is our favourite as it is like being on holiday each morning even in winter.

A very nice house... I would personally start with a good clean up and jet wash the slabs, stairs etc. It always looks better already after a good clear up and it’s free!!! -Redefine and refresh the flower beds: get rid of old plants and put fresh shrubs, flowers, evergreens, climbers.... turn up the earth, add mulch or bark for a neat looking flower bed! - add an amazing outdoor light - put a house number - get symmetrical pots on each side of the front door!! Et voilà!

Hi All, Back again as contract exchange is almost there. I have been looking at few options as below: New porch. New Porch/Garage roof - Either flat or pitched (still to be decided). New windows. New Garage door. Repaint the roof tiles. Cladding, no example of coloured cladding I have seen are that impressive. So I am thinking about one of the below options: VOX faux Brick cladding - https://www.voxpanels.co.uk/external-cladding/ Repaint the existing tiles Slip Brick New Clay hanging tiles ( Rustic ones ) I really like the look of this house. - http://www.residentialcreations.co.uk/builder/bickley.htm Advice please especially if any of the above idea should be No go, e.g. is painting the tiles (wall or roof) is good idea? I am trying to visualize so if anybody can help or recommend website/software I can use to draw.

Check out Back to Front's website in Farnham for some inspiration. If I remember, they've done quite a few 60s remodels!

I might also consider replacing the window to the left of the door with a bay and then adding a smart flat roof to create a porch area. A flat roof in my opinion will look much better than a pitched roof- fibreglass roofs last for many many years so are a great option.

Are there other houses like yours on this street? If yes you could take pictures of some of the best looking ones and post on here and you can then get multiple opinions on why some are better than others.
For me, I can see that it is not north facing and it might be nice to do something likeJonathon suggested of having some sort of roof over the door and the left window. I would be tempted to make it so that you have a bench in that area even if no one sits in it!

Hi Rachel, dependant on the style you are wanting, whether from classic, traditional or contemporary modern, and also your budget? We have done various projects from PVCu to aluminium. A lighter shade will look nice which could be timeless rather than black or graphite for a change? Here are some examples:
