Antique mirrored glass kitchen splashback

Hi, I I'm keen on using antique mirror splashbacks in my kitchen and wanted advice:

1) how practical is it as a splashback

2) how durable is it - does it have to be toughened mirror (the cost is ~3x for toughened vs non-toughened mirror)

3) any other considerations to bear in mind?

Hello @nc7613. We are being asked for antiqued mirrored glass splash backs for approximately 8 out of 10 kitchens at the moment. We are yet to find a toughened version. I suggest you do a risk assessment on yourself & if you are likely to bang heavy pans etc on it which could crack it. You would also need to be careful as to how close your hob is to it. We opted for a tiled version in our kitchen design studio which looks great. Good luck! P&P

We've just got a mirrored splashback for the whole run behind hob and up to cabinets. Finding it really practical so far although does emphasise any mess so makes us keep on top of the washing up a bit more! A definite yes to toughened glass - ours isn't antique mirror though just normal.

Hi guys, Yes I plan on putting shelves in (or the glass holders that hold the glass by its stem) but wanted to decorate the back first. Will have a look at that site and also look for DIY options. I'm sure it involves acid - hence why I didn't want to try it myself.

Antiqued glass? Be aware that it is really low chance that the antiqued mirror splashback will be toughened. Most of the companies cannot replicate the antique mirror on a toughened glass, so make sure to get the written confirmation from the company that the splashback is toughened. If it is not, then it will not last longer than 2 weeks, to be honest, it is too easy to smash it accidentally with a pan. We can do the toughened antique mirrors, whenever it comes to wall art or a splashback, just let me know if you would like to know the price, the only thing I just need is rough dimensions. Our number is 020 3870 4399, keep it close at hand, as unfortunately, I am almost 100% sure that it is going to be a problem to find honest toughened antique mirror supplier in the UK. Good luck! :)

Hi. My brother and SIL have had one for nearly 2 years. My SIL finds it easy to clean etc and has no complaints. It has to be toughened if it's next to a direct heat source like gas or an aga. From memory, as it's been asked a few times on here, it doesn't need to be toughened if it's 20cm away from the heat source. I'm not sure it needs to be for induction either. I'd just ask your supplier tbh though. I've got an antiqued mirror over my fire which I know isn't suitable for heat but have given up using the log burner!

I forgot to say there has also been a couple of stories on here where glass has cracked, I assume they used non-toughened/tempered glass

I'm gonna use a glass coffee table top. Here's a photo of it balanced on my bargainacious second hand range cooker.

I've had antiqued mirror glass splashback for almost 2 years. It's great, very easy to clean and looks fabulous. You definitely need toughened glass though.

It is very popular at the moment, and yes, it does have to be toughened; I am about to use it in a project, it will be a few months before it is installed but I am very much looking forward to it! It will look fantastic, and set the tone for the entire space.

Antique mirror is not the only choice. I understand the desire not to have normal bathroom mirror which could look too bling but you could also consider bronze mirror or grey mirror. These products are manufactured by companies like Decoglaze and can be supplied by your kitchen showroom or worktop people who can have them templated and cut for sockets.
These products are routinely used for kitchens but are still mirrors, they can break but a toughened backing makes them safer.
Personally I think it looks odd to combine them with a worktop upstand and prefer to see them fitted from the bottom of the wall cabinets to the worktop.

Hello everyone, firstly thank you for your very helpful responses. I was missing in action as I fell ill and had to be hospitalised. I'm back as of today with renewed vigour to complete mission splashback!

@Gemm - the plain mirror looks lovely! I love how the reflected light brightens up the counter. Hubby's promised to wash up if we have mirrored splashbacks...and I'd like to believe him :)

@Peden & Pringle - I hadn't considered antique tiles - they add so much of drama. Are they just stuck on with adhesive?

@minnie - thanks for the advice. It is going to have to be toughened as you suggest and it will be worth the peace of mind because I don't plan on changing the splashback for several years ;)

@sam - how uber cool does your hob look?! I wouldn't have thought of combining the two but it works so brilliantly.

@nicolakwai - I'm so pleased that you find them durable! Please could you share where you sourced your splashback from. Companies seem to randomly pick a number and then try to justify the cost!!

@Anna Auzins - I love spaces to be flooded with light so the mirrored splashback ticks all the boxes. Would you mind sharing where you sourced your splashback from?

@Jonathan - thanks for the tip regarding tinted mirrors - I hadn't thought of it. I take your point about the mirror starting from the counter rather than from the upstand. It does give a seamless effect. I'll contact decoglaze - its always good getting reccommendations.

I've received quotes ranging from 2.5k-3.5k for an 1.8m x0.6m section with 1 cutout and 1.6m x 0.6m section. I don't know if I'm not being realistic but I was hoping to get a splashback for £1500. It doesn't help that a friend in Austrailia created the 'antique' look on a huge old mirror she had paying less than $25 for supplies and it took her a few hours.......the result is stunning :) All by watching a youtube tutorial!!!

Hello again @nc7613. Sorry to hear you have been poorly. The mirrored tiles are simply stuck on with mirror adhesive. They are from Ca’Pietra & come in 3 different colour ways. Depending on the area you require I am sure they would work with your budget. Good luck! P&P

We have antique mirror behind our hob. It is not toughened but you can only have an induction hob in front of non toughened mirror. We got ours from Decoglaze....and we paid under 2K for a lot more glazing than you mention above. We are very happy with it...it looks amazing!

Chloeloves, mirrored splashbacks are cool, glad you liked it, just make sure it is toughened, fireproof and easy to clean as mirrored splashbacks are usually tough for daily maintenance.

Had a toughened one in our last kitchen, and absolutely loved it - see picture below. I'll be ordering another for our new house as we are finishing the renovation.

Toughened vs non-toughened have been a dilemma for kitchen owners for a while. The objective truth is that yes toughened glass is stronger and heat resistant, but due to significant price difference sometimes it makes sense to take risk and just replace mirror in case of breakage, which will still be cheaper than buying full toughened from the beginning, especially taking in consideration that non-tgh antique is stock product and you don’t need to wait for 2-3 weeks for production.

If you are looking for simple coloured or printed glass, then definitely go for toughened since price difference is insignificant and it’s not only safer and heat resistant, but also 4-5 times stronger to impact which is good against accidental hits.

The other important fact is that broken mirror can bring you bad luck for 7 years!:) so only choose professionals for your installation.
We are now producing probably over 100 splashbacks per month with fair share of toughned mirrors so happy to help!

Can anyone help? I would like to cover a built in wardrobe with panels of mirrored glass. I've looked at Rough Old Glass but wonder if there is anything out there - a little cheaper?
