Want to reinstate a 1870's UK home with a modern extension

Parque floors in the living are and another smaller room which we will knock through into the existing kitchen, and knock through to the garage next to that, then build a modern extension out from the existing kitchen into the garden - currently there is this awful conservatory which is yuck!!

We will change all the horrid 1950's skirting boards and replace them with traditional ones and reinstate the coving too.

Id like to see some 1870's UK house renovations please

Sadly I have to agree with the comments about the poor energy efficiency standards of new housing in the UK - they're criminally low in the first place and sometimes aren't even adhered to properly, which can make living in them expensive, miserable and unhealthy. Historically energy conservation hasn't been an issue as so much of our housing, particularly social/council housing, was built decades ago when energy was plentiful and cheap and hardlly anyone thought about the effect on the planet. On the other hand, the UK has a rich architectural heritage which comes in part from the mix of housing and thanks to the efforts of the conservation movements which arose from the threat of bombing in the C20th wars and then the possibly even worse vandalism of the 1960s town planners! Reading and Glasgow suffered terribly at the hands of the planners but happily now many - though far from all - historic buildings across the country are loved and protected. We're fortunate in the UK not to have a mindset of 'new is better' so bulldoze the old, but there's always a place for innovation and making old houses comfortable and efficient places to live in in the C21st. *gets off soap box*

Hi gogo, here is the new kitchen layout floor plan (excuse annotations); a second one with the lighting and power annotations that seems to have distorted a bit - and a third showing the original layout of the whole ground floor. you can see the vast chimney breast that came out. plus our cellar access (and a drain) were in the old utility room, where we needed units and the island to go. The cheaper solution to all our work would have been to knock through the kitchen and dining room and combine... but I wanted to retain 2 separate lounges. Our kitchen is space isn't vast - but it's actually perfectly proportioned now with our other rooms and apart from those giveaway pillars, almost looks like it was always like that. We lowered our ceilings so no beams showing - took a while to get use to the 2400 height but again, definitely the right decision. I've loaded more pics in my ideabook - (called 'last attempt' in reference to the loading onto houzz debacle, not the kitchen itself....). Good luck with your project.
