Design Dilemma Living Rooms

rug help needed

I have a large and long living room and have put a geometric print rug at one end, but I think the other end looks a bit bare, but I’m a bit stumped what to go for ... I tried the geometric rug in front of the fire but it looked too busy, so plain might work - what colour? Would round work? Thanks

What do you use the bottom half of your room for because it looks a bit bare altogether?

First of all, you aren't clueless :) I would follow your gut and turn the couch to face the fireplace, put the TV on the oak box near the window, the armchair and side table over near the built in dresser, and the red cabinet between the two windows where the armchair was. I like both your pieces of art on the other side of the room. If the red cabinet is between the two windows, you might want to switch the vertical piece with the one that is on the wall above the dining table - just see how it looks. Actually, I think the bird painting could look really good above the fireplace - it will add visual height (as jonathan suggested) and brings some red to that side of the room and it has bits of black and charcoal to tie in the fireplace and the couch...... If you have the TV to the left of the fireplace, I'd move the map (I like it for personal reasons :). Anyway, you really want a mirror up there.... it's a bit tricky because the fireplace is off set. Something this shape would be fab because most other items in there are really angular, but this one is too big and the price is crazy: Otherwise maybe a couple of small mirrors that you can also off set and put in a group, which would also add height: I'd do three or five of different sizes and shapes. I actually like the rug size and colour - it ties in with the blinds and the taupe in two pieces of your art and has good texture. Add a few more cushions to the couch and armchair in a couple of different fabrics. Maybe some of these:

Thanks to you all for your advice, looks like I'm going for number 3 and definitely in a large size, I'm deciding between 2 sizes, both big enough to go under furniture - one just about a quarter way and the other will be much more under the furniture but there is £300 difference in price and I really like my floor so I'm leaning towards the slightly smaller of the 2. All the rugs are Louis de poortere, it's a Belgian make but they are stocked in a lot of UK shops (online anyway).

Another yes to a bigger rug. Sorry. And if you go for the right size rug, you may not feel the need to get another one for the other end of the room. Tips for getting the right rug:

Lynn - do you mean two rugs the same? This was the plan but new thought is it might be overwhelming.

This is a large rug 230x150 - you don’t get much bigger as standard. To get a larger rug I would need it custom made which was just short of £1000. Kids are 5,3, under 1, so not really a sensible investment right now

Personally, I would try placing it just under the edge of your sofa as i agree with the others ie to have a floating rug with such a large room, you need a much much larger one that covers more flooring.

Have you got another picture of the barer end with the chair in? Ie do you have another chair near it? Perhaps a little side table in that spot and even a mini rug just under the chair in a plain colour (to match your other one) will make it cosy

Like you we have 3 young children so I understand your apprehension at spending a lot - and really big rugs (which is what you need) are expensive. Have you looked in IKEA? We have a really big cream coloured rug in the sitting area of our kitchen. Although it’s light in colour it cleans up very easily and looks ‘cosy’. If it helps I can post a picture. When my children are older it’s my intention to replace it but for now it does the job and actually looks pretty ok! You could get 2 without it costing you a fortune.

You could try layering the rug with another larger (cheaper ) one in a tone from your geometric rug. Versatile because you can move them about for different looks.

My first thought is the rug is too small for the room, as others have said. This has the effect of the rug looking like it is floating about. Large rugs do not need to be expensive, it depends entirely on what it is made of (wool, polypropylene) and the time taken to make it, eg whether it is hand tufted (expensive) or woven polypropylene made by machine (much cheaper). There are some great online rug sellers on eBay and The Rug Seller is a good one. Also you can open out the rug on delivery and if you don’t like it you can return it (according to the Distant Selling Act) quite easily, and no traipsing round the shops!
