Career Advice...What Next?

Hi All,

I want to to change my career and move into interior design. I have a diploma in interior design from NDA, but from looking at job adverts that doesn’t seem enough for a legitimate design job. Any advice on what I should do/study next would be appreciate!

(I already have a degree and masters in unrelated topics but would ideally avoid going back to uni!)

I think it depends on which direction you want to go.
I think there are plenty of interior design business, soft furnishings suppliers and kitchen and bathroom showrooms that would value your current qualification - this experience could also better inform the direction you want to take.

Here's an update on the work. I've finished the pebbledash first coat, and the painter did the fascias, soffits, door and window. The green I chose came out a lot darker than I thought, but never mind. What do you think? What's left to do is add some nice pots in front, put up the guttering (I'm going to do that now), another coat of the white masonry paint, and of course the most important part, put a cat image in the window!

College's do part time/ full time courses, I did HNC in interior architecture and then I swapped to architectural technology as I preferred the technical side more, but my classmates continued to HND and last month went on to 3rd year at uni studying interior design and love it. I agree that distance learning won't be very good, at college/uni you receive guidance from people who have studied architecture/ fine art/ graphic design/ 3D computer design/ live clients from the industry/ , not forgetting what you learn from classmates and feedback on your designs. It's a tough course that was a real eye opener for me as I really did think I was going to be matching curtains or something but it's defo much more than that and has made me in awe of interior designers and the the work that they put in.

Hi linen check fabric looks good but would be concerned tattle clunch might look green in some light ! It might be better with white tie if you like the creamy colour or stony ground. It's very difficult to give you advice without having the samples of wallpaper and wood worktop in front of me I do sometimes goggle rooms or kitchens painted in farrow and ball white tie for example lots of images come up it also might be worth calling farrow and ball direct as they offer a great service on the tel for free Am assuming you are using an water based eggshell from farrow and ball and not colour matching the paint !otherwise all your work will be in vain as colour matching paint will never be the same as buying the paint from farrow and ball Advice don't paint the wall in any farrow and ball tester pots paint some lining paper or card board then you can move the board around the room and see the colour in different day light and in the evening in artificial light. Also means you can then save your £3.50 pot on the board ready to use in another room or lend to a friend. If you paint squares of colours all over the wall then it will only confuse you and it's difficult to paint over Farrow and ball paint is brilliant but never colour match Best of luck wish I could help you further Lindsey

hot tub on decking or paving?

Looking for advice on what material to sit a hot tub on? We have an as yet ‘unlandscaped’ area of the garden adjacent to the garage wall. Photo attached. Have recently had the garage wall rendered in white and now has 3 wall lights and power outlet so seems a good location for the hot tub. The ground is slightly higher next to garage as is on a slope running down to the patio where the photo is taken from which is next to the house. Was thinking possibly composite decking to mix up the materials as we have 2 patio areas already. One in silver sandstone and one in grey slate. Is either a better option for weight of a hot tub? Thanks
