Living room carpet ..help

Hi all...we have had laminate flooring down in our living room for 20 years and have decided now to change it back to carpet. I had initially wanted a grey colour but husband is fed up with grey...we have it in upstairs hall and bedroom. He wants to go for one that is called Airforce Blue...which is a greyish blue to my eyes. I like it but not sure what’s going to go with it in the lounge. We can’t afford to change furniture which is light oak but will be getting rid of sofa as it too has seen better days. any ideas or do you think blue is a stupid colour for a living room? Carpet needs to be pet friendly as we have cats.Not even sure what colour of sofa we should be looking for.

Sort the sofas out first, they will cost more than the carpet. Personally I would choose both together. I would opt for a neutral carpet and a blue sofa rather than a blue carpet. Others may disagree.

Hi Colourhappy - thanks for this. Unfortunately we have already chosen and paid for the blue carpet so choosing sofa first isn't an option. Do you think a grey sofa would go with the carpet??

It may just be the photograph but to me it looks as though the floor should have been prepared (sanded down more). It always pays to spend good time on the preparation. The photo also looks like the room might be in shade for some part of the day so might be a bit dark, plus your having a dark sofa by the sound of it. perhaps sand the floors and go for a light or clear coloured sealer not too shiney. Perhaps look out for a large rug as if the room hasn't been soundproofed it could be noisey for the people below and echoey for you. Don't rush and as someone else indicated don't have too much large furniture. Check if you can buy nice blinds off the shelf that would be the right size, you can then get them more reasonably than made to measure.

I think you should try a grey/pink colour scheme.swap the rug for something that you think would suit the room and that matches up to your personal taste but still suits the room. And have you ever thought about painting the room? If you want a grey room how about a light/dark shade of grey for the walls? Hope it helps.

Thank you for your response. We had plans pretty finalised until we found out that we can keep just that long wall into the large space as it is a load-bearing. There is an opportunity to put a door in though. I am attaching what it looked like with all the walls that we can now remove. We have also been tinkering with ideas which I am adding as well. I added some comments on the plans as well. What we want to have is a dining area with a large table that seats 8-10 people. We want enough space for two people to work and cook in the kitchen. Thus, we were thinking of an island or an L-shape workspace coming out. We'd like to have a utility room to have space for all the cleaning utensils. Washer and Dryer will be upstairs in a separate laundry room. The living room is nothing formal but an area to relax and watch TV. We'd like to have an L-shaped cough in there for a family of four (2 kids under the age of 10).

The fireplace is looking great. It looks like a fun project. I work from home too and it can be sometimes a bit much, not being able to break away from the work. I like surrounding myself with things that inspire my work rather than the work itself. Although, that niche you've got is screaming for a built-in bookshelf. But instead of using it as storage for workstuff, you could fill it with things you love instead. It would add texture and colour to the space. You could also consider having it in wood, to bring in the wood texture your wanted on the floor. I really like the colour palette you've chosen. I have a grey carpet myself. It would be easy to add a pop of blue on your chairs. If you are worried about the desk chair, there are products with castors for carpets. Another thought, is perhaps the desk can be pulled away from the wall, so it fills the room. It can act as your desk, as well as a meeting space or a family space in the evening. It also won't feel like you are facing a wall all day long.

Hi jazza6, can you post some pictures. If you have chosen the carpet then you can make the scheme work around it. Get a large sample and take some photos in the room. There are greys and greys so don't rush it. As a starting point, natural taupey linen colours work with blue.
