Kitchen Lighting Under cabinet LEDs look awful - what's going on here?

Hi,

Our builder just connected the LED under cabinet lights which are built into the underside of the kitchen cabinets ( they came with the new kitchen). The light they give off has a big ugly yellow halo round it. It is not the kind of look I imagined and I think it looks awful - why does it look like this and is there anything I can do to improve it??? Thanks!

My guess is that the light must have a thick edge around where it shines down. The led can't shine through the edge as much as the middle, thus it gives a yellowy halo effect. I presume this is the design of the light and something that can't be changed.

Would it be possible to reduce the lumens of the bulb? And also change it to a warm white. This light looks both harsh, ie too strong, and cool in tone. Although this would not change it entirely, it would soften the look. This kitchen I designed has led lights inserted in the shelves and, as you can see, is far less aggressive, but still provides task lighting for the worktop

I've just seen this thread again, my last comment was in January...but here goes although you may have finished your new kitchen by now. I'm just in the throes of doing mine. Wooden floor is a lovely choice for a cold climate but I wouldn't do wooden worktops also, too matchy matchy and think of all that work maintaining them. Here in Spain marble is definitely a thing of the past as it is not tough enough, and granite has been taken over by Silestone, although the new thing is Neolith/Dekton which is very thin but super tough (bit pricey though). My advice is neutral, neutral, neutral for the stuff that costs the most money, adding colour with the cheap stuff, ie paint, blinds, etc. Bottom line: it's your kitchen so don't listen to any of us, choose what YOU like. Hi Claire, as Litecraft have already pointed out it does depend on what you are going to have in the rest of your kitchen but for me I would go with the Chrome option as think it will make your lights stand out more. If you want to go for something different to chrome there is also a satin nickel option too like this one which isn't as shiny as the chrome options like the one below. It’s nice especially in the winter months to have a background light left on in the kitchen. I have under cabinet wall lighting on only 2 long wall display units as they’re the only wall units I have as most of my storage is in a tall bank of units. Hello Nadine, before choosing a paint colour for the walls various factors need to be taken into consideration first - What is the space being used for? What is the size of the space? Aspect of room - N-S-E-W (only applies if there are windows)? Lighting - If there is a window ( and depending on the aspect) as the outdoor colour temperature changes throughout the day from warm to cooler hues, the appearance of the paint colour will change, bringing out the cool or warmer under-tones of the paint. On the other hand, if solely reliant on a simulated light source, then the type of lighting will also have an impact on the colour of the paint. As there are many lighting styles and bulb types available,this is a separate area for discussion ( but one I’m happy to go into more depth with should you wish to consult with me). Existing FF&E - What will be staying and the colours/patterns/textures of these items, and which colour and finish will work best What kind of style are you looking to create? These questions are often over-looked when choosing a new paint colour, but are really important before making any decisions. My suggestion for the space you are looking to change the colour in would be to make sure that the paint colour has an element of warmth to it, as it is an ‘intimate’ and cooler space. It’s definitely important to try a ‘sample’ of the colours on ‘each’ of the walls,and check the colours throughout the day,including with a light on. With the existing Tiles and Flooring you’ve chosen, a pink shade will help to soften the space whilst creating a calm and welcoming environment. If you like F&B, Setting Plaster (dusky pink) is a lovely shade but may be a little to ‘brown’ for you, so I’m wondering if Pink Ground , which is a lighter shade, will be better for you. Thanks for replies - I contacted the kitchen company and they came round and changed the bulbs and now no yellow halo! Looks much better. Also a bit softer although still quite white so I might change again at some point to warmer. Anyway, panic over - they are looking much more respectable now!
