New orangery.... lantern roof size.... heat, light, noise HELP

Hi Everyone, We are planning an orangery extension which will combine small seating area and a dining area coming off a large extended kitchen. The only kitchen window is coming out to make doorway through to orangery. So we need light in the kitchen..... will have 5m bifold doors but want to know thoughts on size of the lantern.... will have an ultrasky thin profile max glass with good U values ... but how big.... we want wow but also to be liveable... max could be 6x4 lantern... too big? Any experience on noise levels?

We do a frameless and traditional roof lantern

We can make one lantern to give the wow factor at 1.5m - 3m, structurally bonded with no metal frame or a more conventional large lantern.

Having had another look at roof lanterns, we've decided we prefer the look of flat glass windows. Just a personal preference that it's nice to have something with a clear view of the sky and no frame. Love the look of your kitchen Jayne Forrest so thanks for sharing. I agree, you need to speak to your architect. 7m does not sound a lot at all if you want a traditional looking orangery however given the depth of the room, the doors and windows, in theory I doubt you need any type of roof light. My brother built a 8 x 6.5m extension for his kitchen. On the 8m wall he has 5m bifolds and a window either side. He put in 2 lanterns of 3m x 1.8-2m. He designed the extension himself and his one regret of not using an architect isn't he hadn't considered the amount of heat and light that would come through the lanterns. His floor and furniture also started to fade pretty quickly so he recently had UV window film professionally fitted which has helped a lot. His lanterns are motorised. He also has pendant lights fitted in them. He's surrounded by woodland but he has a real issue with flies etc coming through the lanterns. It may also be worth speaking to the architect about lighting if you want a large lantern/s and the fly issue if you want to open the lanterns. There are also different types of glass available with thermal qualities, built in blinds etc which your architect should know all about. Orientation of the room is also key ( his faces south btw) and whether you have large trees/buildings etc blocking light.

I’d think I’d go for an extension if it’s within budget. As others have said, he orangery will get really hot and need blinds and roof blinds which will rapidly add up in cost. We’re having a roof lantern fitted in our extension and I contacted some lantern roof blinds companies yesterday to get rough quotes and for size of ~2.4x1.3 one company said between £1479 and £2233, and another (without size guide) said £2-5k You might need that regardless of the orangery vs extension debate of course, however presumably it’d be larger in an orangery. Plus all the blinds.

Hi Sam, In my view, a dark worktop will work well with burnt orange splashback and it's good to be a bit more bold. However, it comes down to personal taste... I notice something else: I would want to cover up the utility area, as guests will walk through to the toilet. For example slim wooden shutter doors (of around 35cm width, so the washing machine/dryer have double doors to access) or two light sliding doors along the whole length, like a wardrobe, so you access either right or left side at a time. In order to achieve this, the light switches which I see near the door leading outside have to be adjusted: on top of each other rather than next to. This is a change worth doing! Good luck...

@andyman321andy did you fit a roof lantern in the end? What was the outcome withe the noise level? Interested to know as We just submitted our plans to the council for a 3.5x3.25 lantern. Thanks
