kitchen cabinet handles - size advice please

close to signing contract to discover little details to be fixed.

I love Boss bar handles, brushed steel. I've been advised to have very small, imo, size and to have same size on every door.

128mm. we have a short run of tall units, FF, Larder, Built in oven.
two sets of 45cm door wall cabinets.
under counter a couple of 60cm units and two sets of 80cm 3drawer units.

It's a shaker kitchen and I like simple clean lines.

128mm seems short enough especially on the wide drawers. ive asked for quotes on next size up for drawers, 16 cm, with 128mm for others. I had to insist and felt a bit foolish. not to mention these are not included in cost. many are but I prefer these and felt almost rude saying, No, those fred ones don't look the same...

Hi Angela - why not ask the company supplying your kitchen to show you the different handles on their design software ? Should be easy enough for them to do that .

thanks for replying. The software is not great but tbh the person I dealt with kept on about some of the free handles and that it's standard for the same size handle to be used all over the one kitchen and that only a handle small enough for the two small doors decided the size for all doors/drawers. The drawers are only 80cm wide but still...

It's my first, probably last, time buying a kitchen so it's taken ages and lots of to-ing and fro-ing.

I suppose I didn't feel listened to and i'm spending £20k!

If you've got the time and the inclination (and budgets are tight) I reckon it's worth giving the paint a go to see how it looks. Lots of the kitchens we're doing for clients now are ones with painted finishes and although (as mentioned above) this isn't the most classic style/a bit old fashioned it will look completely different painted. New handles... save up for the kitchen you really want!

Hi Erin, LOVE the worktop you have chosen. Have you considered using no handles at all and having push in/out door openers instead? This would compliment the simple and minimalist design of the worktop and keep everything pure. Sometimes handles can make an elegant design feel a bit busy but if you have your heart set on handles then you could perhaps think of using handles just on the base units and then going for the push in/out door openers on the wall units. I would stay away from black. Black fixtures are very popular at the moment and look great but you have the softness of the concrete and white so go for something that is softer and warmer in tone to compliment these. They also won't date so quickly. If you do decide to do away with handles all together, the eye will naturally be drawn to other parts of your kitchen and you can throw more emphasis on the flooring and worktop. It's down to your own personal preference. You are off to a good start with what you have chosen. Good luck!

The standard gap between your worktop (at 900/910) and the underneath of your wall units (without pelmet) is 490/500mm so for a standard tower (2120 inc plinth) you have 720 tall wall units and for taller 2300 towers (inc plinth) you'd have the 900 wall units so the wall units are at 1400mm from the floor. But I think you're correct as you have a sink and need the extra height between the wall units and worktop. When I do a plan and if there's wall units over a sink I'd always have the wall units stepped up over the sink area if its a long run, if its just a short run then i'd have them all the same height. Even with 720 wall units these would be at 1580 from the floor which still might be a bit to low for you if you're tall.

Everything is just personal preference. I agree that T bar handles are a nuisance insomuch that you can catch yourself. I’m not a knob lover but I have arthritis in my fingers and knobs are more difficult to grab as opposed to a handle. By co-incidence I was looking for black handles only this morning for a customer and while there are some it is limited. Look online at Hafele. You can’t buy direct from them but Toolstation stock some of their products or give Hafele a call and ask for a local trader. Regarding splashbacks look online at Premier Range for colourfull glass splashbacks. Oh dear - that’s one way - but not the only way !
If you choose a handle that comes in small, medium and large then you can mix them - ask for print outs of elevations to scale - then try the different handle sizes drawn onto tracing paper over the top - or draw them in pencil etc ... you will be living with this for a long time - it’s worth a bit of time now to get it right !

Nb. The handles don’t have to be the same even - as long as they are the same finish - I have knobs, cup handles and two sizes of grab handles on my own kitchen - and it looks great (IMO) .
