Is window in shower an issue?

Hi houzzers. We're finalising plans for our bathroom refurb and for various reasons we think this layout would be the best given the small size of the room (2.3m x 1.45m).

The only compromise is that the window will be in the shower area. I have seen photos of various bathrooms on Houzz installed in a similar way. The builder says that water going directly onto the window may cause problems in the future (e.g. leakages onto lower floor etc).

Any thoughts/advice?

Hi all, thanks for all your help. Can't believe it's been over a year since I posted. We went for the window in the end, with a very slight incline on the sill (hardly noticeable). We've had no issues so far also because it's not used regularly (mainly for guests). Final decoration touches needed so I started another thread... thanks for your help!

Personally I wouldn't like the window in a shower area. You don't give sizes but couldn't the shower go where the loo and basin are and then reposition them on the window wall?

Unfortunately the window is quite large, so the toilet cistern / basin would overlap the window. See attached photo.

I misunderstood the plan mistaking the tank cupboard for a bath. So I assume from your comment that the tank is going- I got rid of one in my last house by installing a combi boiler and presume you are doing the same. I would suggest you put the bath and shower on the window wall but put the shower on the right side of the window where there is more wall. WC where the tank is now and the basin stays in the original location but perhaps swap for a vanity with loads of storage. Given that he is quite tall consider hanging the basin higher than normal.

Our bath with over-bath shower is in the same position as you're proposing, i.e. under a window. The windowsill is tiled with a slight forward slope and we have a waterproof roller blind, inset within the window recess, both for privacy when showering and keeping water off the window. Like others have said, some form of window covering is needed to preserve modesty when showering when standing so relatively close to a window, even with 'privacy glass' in the window. All I do is give the blind a quick wipe over with a microfibre cloth to mop up any splashes before rolling it back up once I've donned my bathrobe robe! Our bathroom is approx. the same size as yours and having the bath/shower on the window wall does seem to be best layout.

We did the same thing in our last house. Although we didn't use a tray, we created a 'step in' with a half-height wall with a bath screen on the top and just tiled the area rather than have a tray so the space felt more open. Here are some photos. At the widest part I think it was about 750. This allowed us to have a separate bath. The shower is tucked behind the door.

I have the same issue in my kitchen. I did have vertical blinds which I hated but they did create shade but blocked the view. I’ve now got curtains which are great, but block the view! I then bought an awning, only a cheapie, and it works to a degree but only in the afternoon. I think a sturdier larger awning may do the job better but they’re not cheap. Also cranking it open ain’t easy! You can get electric ones. You will notice in the pic below how little shade it creates. Bigger the better I think.

We had a window in our previous house's shower (it was wet room style) and didn't have any leakage issues.
We tiled all the inner sides etc. and it was on the ground floor (next to the front door on the outside!) so if there were any issues it wouldn't have flooded the floor below.

I guess it depends on the quality of the work?

Are you getting rid of the bath and having a walk in shower area instead? As a 1.45m bath is probably too small for a relaxing bath!

Yes we would. We'll have a bath in the 2nd bathroom instead.

I’d say it would be ok as long as you tile all around it right to the seal! Window dressings are also something to think about because of the condensation of the warm showers you don’t want them to get damp and mouldy. Try for a waterproof blind or something!

Karen, how about a walk in shower where the shower currently is (to right of door) and use the gained space for a generous vanity area?

I’ve had windows in showers twice without problems. Although your window is taller it doesn’t have a window cil (spelling?) so I personally would take the chance. Although I would absolutely make sure you have good extraction and heat. In my currant bathroom I’ve got a central heating radiator and a separate electric only one because the central heating couldn’t do both. I’ve also got a plastic wood effect Venetian blind and it doesn’t look plastic at all. Having the window easily accessible without bath or toilet in fron makes it really easy to open the window too.

Could you have the door opening outwards and the shower in the corner and sink where the bath is now? Loo could then stay in the same place. We have our small shower room door opening the 'wrong' way and it solves the problem.

Hi Karen

Previous comments state everything about the window but I would still consider the layout.I do not know details of the size of the room so it is only suggestion. I would change into a pocket door (losing internal space by few inches is not big deal), new wall wider with the smaller door opening. Quadrant shower enclosure attached to this wall. Ideally would be changing the window, smaller and higher window cill to accommodate WC pan and basin on shorter wall. Large towel warmer if you do not plan for UFH. If you going to install UFH than small rail with few hangers.

Re: opening the door the wrong way, it is an option but the toilet cistern would be higher than the window. We did consider making the window smaller, but then the windows at the back of the house (looking up from the garden) won't be the same size. We thought this would look too odd, especially given that there are 3 windows of this size, and a slightly lower window from the staircase landing (between Ground and First floors)

Could you get a corner toilet and sink in either side of the window, you would need under 350 mm for sink, and 215 mm for cistern. That would leave about 1200 mm x the distance from your door to the wall.

Hi we have a smaller window in our shower area which is wet room design. Extraction in ceiling very close by, underfloor heating and wall rad also help control any condensation. Something else we did was to replace glass with fully frosted glass. Never a problem for us.

We have had problem when window sill was at level. The water was staying on window sill. After we have made a little bit incline towards shower, problem has gone.

@Bina Nana, same here - did you make a decision? I may end up having a 900mm wide window in the shower which is almost as wide as the shower itself which is 1000mm. Plan on tiling all around and inclining the tiles on the cill a little bit.
