Design Dilemma Living Rooms

Typical Victorian Living Room

Need everyone's ideas on how I could change this room in a house I'm purchasing. I like houses where the alcoves have shelving and the window alcove have seating but this window seems too low for that. I would change flooring and colour of the walls for sure and maybe get shutters too. Any ideas?

Have you considered Venetian blinds?

We have a similar room in our Victorian home and have had these wooden ones for almost twenty years.

We still like their look and have proven to be durable and very practical.

Not the best photo and room a bit messy, but hey, we LIVE here...

I would say taking up a chunk of the otherwise useable wall with a radiator really isn't ideal. if you really can't afford to move it, then I would look at how beautiful/low the window is. If it starts low and the room is not super light, I'd be worried about blocking the light. conversely, if its v bright then def dont put TV opposite the window. I would def think about whether this is south/north facing before planning. looks like a lovely room, good luck!!

They are lovely windows! I think the windows would actually look better without the curtains. Do you close the curtains at night for privacy when sitting in the room? Or just close at night going to bed? I think shutters might look too much for the big windows and you need something simpler. I like roman blinds. Or how about just curtains at the 2 sides, and when pulled back at the sides they are swept away from the walls/windows.... or held back with a hook/holder?

What a fascinating space and stunning view! I wouldn't worry too much about what's behind the cabinetry as the bulky bits on the right are probably the chimneys and so those will be solid with solid wall behind. Also they look quite new so shouldn't hide any old damp or rot issues. I think you should really accentuate the alcove and so I would suggest putting the sofa against the other wall and remove that cabinetry, saving or replacing the alcove cabinetry. This could be TV or drinks or display but lighting and pretty contrasting paint could make this stunning. I would also suggest looking at painting right up to the top of the arch and so haige blue although dark, would make a very cosy space but you may want to consider something lighter and brighter if this is more of an everyday space to enjoy the view from. cabinetry could be hague blue with lighting.

Hi Nisha, for me the white walls look too bright and bare. How about painting the whole fireplace wall in navy? Navy looks fab with tan sofas. Your beautiful rug looks too small and lost. If budget allows get a bigger rug and anchor the front legs of each sofa onto it, it will cosy up the room. Art with more colour would also be good, and plants, either faux or real dotted about. That corner between the fireplace wall and the tv wall would look lovely with a palm in it. Here’s some visual ideas

Hi E D, we've got these blinds in our current house but as we have toddlers and these windows are so low, we prefer to go for something a little safer and more difficult to break.

I agree with the panelling suggestion. It transforms a room. Panel all the way round the room and build in shelves/ bookcases on each side of the chimney breast. You have a beautiful window. Shutters would look great. Put a large mirror above the fireplace. It can look amazing.
