Sliding doors, approx 3.6m opening, 2 or 3 pane? Recommendation? Tips

For back kitchen wall, opening onto garden.

In Scotland, so won't be opened much!
Not having bifold as don't have the space in or out for the bunch-up!

Any ideas welcome? Ta

How about 4 panes with the middle two opening?

We are in Scotland and have spec'd a 2 pane 4.25m sliding door. We decided as it won't be opened too often we'd prefer the best uninterrupted view rather than lots of window frames.
Ours are triple glazed Aluclad and are being made by Uniwindows of Edinburgh, not many companies offer wide 2 pane sliders.

hi, we have 2 big sliding doors/windows, the oldest one is 3.2 metres and is in 2 sections, the latest one we had double glazed is 3.6m and we were told that building regs wouldn't allow it to be in 2 sections so it had to be 3. I'm not sure if this was true or not but we went with 3 and it looks great. hope this helps you

Hiya Jill, thanks for sending those images over. In response to your first question about your bedroom, I can think of a couple of solutions that may work. The first is the same solution as my previous French window answer to @montbray and fit something that moves with the window, either a Pleated or a Venetian which operate under tension and open with a thumb tab rather than a cord. Alternatively, it would look quite nice if a blind, particularly a Roman blind was fitted right to the top of the wall above the window, at the ceiling. This will allow the blind to be ‘dressed’ to form a valance effect above the window when the blind is open, giving full view from, and use of the window and when it is closed, it will give the illusion of the window being taller. In the case of your bathroom blind, you might like to try a waterproof Roller blind made from PVC fabric. Alternatively, Faux wood blinds are a really great idea, as they have all the look of traditional Wooden blinds, but won't warp in wet or steamy conditions. Admittedly, it is a difficult window to dress and there are not a lot of options, but hopefully, these will give you some ideas. Sarah

Sorry, didn't finish! Definitely not anything more than 3 pane. Each door will be 1.2m which is fine. A door smaller than 2m just doesn't look great to me. I've saw 4 and 5 panes in around your opening and they don't look good, first thing you notice is all the vertical lines....rather than the view. Make sure you see the actual door sizes, not on a website, in person. You need to do that to see what you prefer. I'm in Scotland, we've had ours opened less than 5 times this year!

We have been through the same. Our gap is 3.4. We were advised that you need to look for bifolds run along the bottom and do not hand from the top. We debated sliders due to the slightline but felt as it is such a small space that we would lose too much of the opening with sliders so opted for 4pane sliders to keep along with other lines on the house. I advise regardless to think about: Lines …try to stick to three doors due to the three pane glass in your gable window so things feel more uniformed and less messy Tracks …sliders can have wide tracks Openings …what space is left for you to walk through when the doors are open Outside space…how will you use the outside space as don’t forget bifold stick out All of these are things we debated to get to our decision

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone know if there would be much difference in price eg 2 x 1.8m doors, or 3 x 1.2m or even 4 x 0.9m. Do doors come in standard sizes or are they all made to measure?

We have a similar size opening and went for 3 as we wanted uninterrupted view through the middle. Also I can have the curtains either side pushed all the way back or slightly closed either side and still have the open view through the middle. . I think for the very wide openings 2 look really good but at this width I prefer the 3 with the clear view through the centre.

We used Express Doors in Glasgow and they specialise in sliding and bifold doors. Give them a ring, they are so helpful and they will be able to give you an indication of price and what's best to go for in your space. I couldn't recommend them enough and the whole process was seamless and aftersales and service has been excellent too.

We've got 4.4m and are having 3 panels but it was a close run thing as I prefer the look og wider panels. We are south though so (hopefully) will be opening them more often. With 3.6m and in Scotland I'd be choosing 2 panels...

...*unless* you are going to have curtains which will hide each end of the doors even when pulled back, or furniture which blocks the ends. If that's the case then go for 3 so as to leave the centre clear as per above.
