Please help with my boring living room
hi guys. I’ve recently bought a house and moved my furniture in. As you can see the living room looks super plain. The colour of the walls is a more yellowy type magnolia. It looks brighter in the night Due to the lighting of the room. I’m not sure what I can do to make the room look better. There is only a small window so it doesnt get much sun. i have been thinking of painting it white bit would it be too harsh? There’s also a long wall on the left that looks unfinished. I just want it to look fresher, brighter and more “put together” Please help
ps it is an “open plan” house behind the sofa is the stairway going upstairs

Comments (10)HI -- I like the red wall but I think the whole room in that would be too much. So right now you need to cut down the contrast of the red wall . Paint a light cream tan on the other walls and also on the ceiling but leave the crown the same color. This will tone down the red and accent the crown molding. You could also use a blueish grey in the same way. Or you could also use a grey with a hint of lavender . Get some color sample cards or pots (benjamin moore paints). Comments (23)There just isn't enough in the room, but all these things come with time and money. I don't think the leather sofa gives at all in the room, it looks really small and heavy looking compared to the new gorgeous one and the chair at the back serves no purpose and looks kinda dumped there. Pictures, side tables with objects on them a rug, large basket with logs or books in it. Don't be afraid to mix things, I have urns, a wooden horse, lanterns, candelabra in my room varying sizes, some real statement pieces. A set of pictures always looks nice too, 4 or 6 together. Comments (3)Hello gryer84, Have you considered curtains that blend with the wall colours.. That way they are not so prominent. Why not bring the sofas further into the room and have then facing each other either side of the fireplace.. Not too close so the room is equally filled, then the room is more proportionally arranged., Coffee table in between and then you could have a console table if you have one behind the sofa facing the kitchen with a lovely vase of decorative piece.. this offers a nice visual feature that splits up the dining and living areas in a nicer way that just a rear view of the sofa.. Perhaps you have another mirror or something to sit with the round mirror on the wall.. It looks a bit lost by itself.. Maybe another smaller setting would be ideal for it and something larger, picture, canvas or something.. For the rear wall, you may possibly have a larger piece to offer some height and an armchair to compliment the sofas... Bring the side table forward and have that with the sofa furthest away from the kitchen.. possibly in the window corner side. This could go with a floor lamp for the opposite back wall corner to give warmth and extra accent lighting.. As we can see from the photos you already have quite a neutral room colour, although the red may be darkening the room a little with the contrast of the dark furniture. How about lightening the room by getting rid of the red wall feature and carrying on with the neutral theme. Also by using lighter accessories (cream curtains) this will lighten your room. Some suggestions for you, but do try out colours first before you commit to painting entire walls:
You could paint the longer wall behind the sofa Denim Drift and the other walls Nutmeg White.
I would place the TV on a media unit, like the Ikea Hemnes maybe, and move it out of the corner to the wall.
As E D already mentioned: grouping the stars together will give a bigger impact and bring it together. I would also get a larger rug.

6 years agoHi guys! Me again. I’ve had a bit of a change about. I’m no good at DIY so I can’t move the clock yet or add any shelves and not had a chance to paint but what do you guys think? I’ve got rid of the corner tv unit and put the tv on my cabinet ( I couldn’t chuck because I’ve not left my bought it and on a first time buyer budget I couldn’t chuck ha). I’ve moved the sofa, even tho it’s in front of window it doesn’t block any sun out. It’s just the right height. I’m going to add some shelves and paint ASAP. I think I’m going to paint it an off white and the long wall a feature colour.
but what do you guys think of the change around? I’ve also ordered a large cream rug to put in the gap

6 years agoWanted to keep you posted!!! I painted my living room Dulux Timeless and denim drift on the main wall! I LOVE it. Thanks so much for your ideas. I’m going to put two oak shelves on the wall next to tv to display stars etc. And a big rug. I’m also thinking a white fluffy standing lamp! I’ll attach some photos. Tell em what you think!! Cxxx

Wanted to show you that you need something larger and hang it lower on the wall above the table... Are you familiar with Command strips/hooks? They are by 3M. Easy for hanging stuff on walls.

6 years agoSorry. Just one more thing I’m puzzling over.. I want to put two oak shelves on the wall by over from the tv. On top of each other but the bottom one to the right slightly. How high up should I put them? They’ll have photo frames/ stars/ candles on etc

6 years agoThe room looks great, love the new wall colour and layout. I might add a cushion and maybe a little in some art for the shelf in an orangey salmon pink (maybe with some more gold). I love feather lights but it might be a little too much with everything else but you can always try it! I also agree with Carolina re art over the dining table
