Unit design - how would you do this please...
Comments (19)The frames look kind of squished on some of the shelves, but don't worry about that now. I'm not a big fan of stuff on the top of the tall unit nor how much you have on top of the short unit. I think if you remove the things from the top of the taller one, you'll like it much better. Then, put only one or three things on each shelf, and layer some. For example: put a couple of candles in front of a framed photo -- give it some depth. The shelf unit is dark, so you might want to keep your ornaments, etc. a lighter colour....See MoreWhat to do to my bedroom
Comments (15)It is a lovely room but as you have chosen black and white monochrome, you need to get a bold or big/ item in black into the upper part of the room - ie: like a beautiful bold/sculptural black monochrome reading lamp/light for example. And also think about a couple of beautiful grey decorative cushions (monochrome) for the bed. And a beautiful small white sheepskin rug for the black floor, to add the look of more comfort. I would put the mirror above the dressing table instead of above the bed. And find a large interesting black and white art-deco photograph or print to put above the bed. I think a few art-deco style things like the photo/print, a lamp and a sheep skin rug and cushions will look stunning - choose them wisely. And stick to mono-chrome colours which you have already chosen as colour-scheme. That will really bring the room together and make it look fabulous. Good luck and please show us the results afterwards. And one last thing I think a different luxurient headboard to your bed in the art-deco monochrome style is a must....See MorePlease help! Comments (8)Hello Heidi, Firstly it's a great room and lots of potential here. You could paint the feature wall with the fireplace a slightly darker shade of something that compliments the sofas.. In this way you instantly create a focus for the room and the fireplace does just that. I'd like to suggest that you place the sofa in line with the fireplace. Then 1 armchair I would angle to the left of the fireplace if you're looking at it. The book case is a reach away when wanting to read but I'd turn it round to frame the doors.. It might be a nice idea to actually move the other bookcase over to place on the other side... ie where the chest of drawers is.. So they both frame the doors... Paint the mirror frame and hang this... Keep some space free on the mantle as this gives the fire room to become a bit more expansive... Why not place the chest of drawers to the left of the fireplace behind the armchair... You can house toys and things here. It's both elegant and a good way to frame the fireplace as you don't have a chimney breast.. On the other find a low side table or a low cabinet.. You could house the television on this pretty much as it is currently.. Keep drinks in the cabinet or something, so they have functions and multiple uses.. Differing heights adds to interest here and it could be good to hang that 1 picture on the rear of the sofa wall with the others... Then there is a bit of room for the little one's to play as you can place the little white table and chairs near the window where it's warm with the rad. Find a nice lampshade for the central light and then place the table lamp close to the sofa.. possibly one with the armchair.. So you have pools of light in different areas and the room is ambient. You may find you do without the central light all together.. So really the key here is that I don't think you need to buy anything else and indeed I feel it would spoil the flow to add more seating.... Scatter the cushions so they are fewer, one or two at 1 end and 1 or two on the armchair.... maybe make a seating pile for the little ones with any left over.. : ))...See MoreTell us: Do you have any home renovation regrets?
Comments (32)Whilst I recognise there's a few tradespeople on here bemoaning fussy clients I have to say my biggest regrets when renovating my house was not being specific enough with trades! We had an electrician put in an extra light switch in the hall to control both the downstairs and upstairs lighting. He put it in a good 10-15cm lower than the other switch further along the same wall which looked completely ridiculous. Made him move it in line with the other one much to his annoyance. Another similar incident was with a vertical column rad for the kitchen - whilst I was specific enough this time to ask it be centered to the wall it was on, he installed it much higher than needed with about 30cm of pipe sticking out the bottom! It would have looked much better in line with the doorframe adjacent. Had to learn to live with that one. We had engineered wood floors put in upstairs - the fitter used the shortest wall in the smallest room to take a plumbline from. When it came into the hall it was obviously on a complete wonk. By this point I'd gotten a bit better at speaking up and ensuring we actually got what was needed (and paid for!). He had to take it up and re-lay using the hall as the plumbline. Looked so much better but he was extremely annoyed! After all this I learned to use masking tape to direct exactly where pipes/light switches/trim should be fitted so there was no room for 'interpretation'. I also forced myself to speak up more and advocate for what I really wanted. That said I'm a designer by trade so I generally know what I want and how to make it look good but was definitely a bit too shy to contradict trades in the beginning!...See MoreMichael Buss Architects, Ltd
