Direction new engineered wood flooring should be laid
Comments (5)Thanks Jill. Sorry to be confusing. As you come through the front door it has 2 x glass panels. The inner porch door has a glass panel. I would like the wood to run the length of the first part of the hall, the dining room to the right would also run in the same direction. However, after the first part of the hall, you then turn left into the second part of the hall where again I want it laid along its length. It's how the wood joins up with an expansion joint (see sketch of what I think the fitter means to do) that I'm just not sure will look right? Could do with seeing some pics of anyone who has had a floor laid this way. Thanks...See MoreContradicting Advice on Wide or Narrow Wood Floor Planks
Comments (12)I have a friend who put one of our 260mm x 2.20m planks in his living room, which measured 4.50m x 3.50m (15.75sqm). It didn't look right in the room, the planks were too big for the area. He should have gone with our 190mm x 1.860m plank. 19cm wide planks are still relatively wide. Its nice to have a wide long plank, it accentuates the length of the room, always run the length of the room, and toward the light - so pointing toward the windows. If you think about it - it is easier to yield short narrow planks of wood from a tree, this is why narrow short boards are the cheapest. They make the room look stubby These were popular in England and yes, are still popular in the States (they are 10-15 years behind us in wood flooring). Getting a wider and longer cut of wood is more desirable and looks more attractive. I would opt for a 190mm board or similar. 2 of the rooms you are doing are very big, you could work a wider board in here. But you want continuity throughout so need to take into account the other smaller rooms. Amer Which sort of colours are you interested in? Comments (22)We are doing the same. weve done our build in 2 phases so weve just conpleted the single storey rear extension and about to start building the double storey in April. Although we are making our front box room bigger by taking it out over the new attached garage to make hopefully 4 double bedrooms. the room will only be 2.38m wide and around 4.3m long with a 90cm space for a shower, toilet and sink. hoping it works and the above from man about the house gives me hope it will as i plan to do something similar with a small area at the back literally for the bed and some bedside tables then a small walk through wardrobe area and then a thin ensuite. will decide where to put stud walls once the shell and floor in built so i can determine the space needed....See MoreWhich wall to open up? Which direction should kitchen face?
Comments (9)Sharon, this is a very difficult question to answer without knowing more about your project. For example, 1. What is on the internal side of these three existing rooms; are there other rooms and if so what is their use? 2. Where is the kitchen at the moment and what is are the other two rooms at the moment? 3. What does the outside of the house look like? A photograph of the elevation where you are thinking of the extension would be useful. 4. What is your brief with regards to dining facilities in the Kitchen? It is difficult to give you a subjective view without more information. As a generalisation, I personally like kitchens where the Islands are looking onto the garden and I like Islands where there is a hob as this allows the cook to engage with their guests or family whilst cooking....See MoreLinda 61
