Wow, the brick work has become the focal point of the fireplace. The firebox of this fireplace is huge and shallow. 2 different options, tuck point the brick and replace with a different mortar the same color as the brick. The closer the color is to the brick the more the pattern will disappear. The other option is to remove the brick and start over. Because the firebox is huge, I'd have used a different pattern on the brick, like a herringbone with a standard color mortar. The distributor that you purchased the brick from should have some responsibility for allowing you to purchase black mortar, especially since you purchased the surround from them as well. The builder should have questioned the choice as well, and if you were not there to see this go up, they should have taken a picture and sent it to you after about 3 rows of brick went up. Because the firebox is shallow, the black fire proof paint will create a big black hole.

Hi - we have been installing TVs above fireplaces for the past 15 years. Our recommendation is that you should leave at 50-100cm clearance from the top of the fireplace to the bottom of the TV and fit a protuding mantelpiece to deflect/minimise the effect of heat thermals. Thanks Gary - looks great and it's made me rethink how viable my budget really is...As we also need to decorate, do some replastering, new skirting boards, maybe do some re-wiring, get a new carpet and some Roman blinds made for the bay window. Some great money saving tips, thanks Steve. I think I'm going to get a fireplace guy to come and look at how viable the fireplace is in terms of having a wood burner and how much it would cost to change it and then have a think. I'm also loving the idea of getting a cheap wooden fire surround -maybe a secondhand one off eBay and painting it up in a contesting colour - like the attached image but not the same colours - probably a vibrant orange.. I also love 1940's and 1950's tiled fireplaces as would have probably been there originally - but the repro versions or decent old ones are so privy..

Hi, yes they're actual flames with all the natural movement and variation you'd expect (and the volume of flames/heat output is controllable with it being gas). When the stove is set up, there are ceramic 'logs' and embers positioned (that do look very realistic) and also some stuff that looks like wire that they call Emberglow. This wiry stuff is near invisible and spread/clumped at the bottom and this causes the flames to vary and lick and dance upwards. We were worried a fake wood burner would look naff and were disappointed when we knew we couldn't have the real thing, but went to see this in action in a showroom and were impressed! It helps that the model we have also comes as a real wood burner and the cast body is identical for both.
