Do these tiles need treating in order to protect them?

I’m putting these tiles as a kitchen splashback. Will they need protecting?

No you would not need to treat our tiles we imprint into the glaze.

Yes, you must give a lot of thought to this - The Council website (planning dept) will show any historical applications and whether they have been granted or not. But if the weather is nice this weekend, I would go and have a look at the effect of the trees in the day - I know the sun will be lower at this time of year but you will be able to see how it impacts on the house. Finally, never assume that because the trees have possibly outgrown the area they were planted in, that the council will grant you permission to have them removed. You are not going to get a definitive answer as to whether permission to remove would be granted without putting in an application so you have to purchase assuming that there is nothing you can do about the trees and that they will be staying. Softwood gates should be treated a minimum of once a year. This is to help prevent water/ moisture entering the gate and "blowing" the cladded panels. Once this happens, you will struggle to open and close the gate (however, given time, they will go back to correct size). As for a brand to use, for softwood gates we would recommend Sadolin. Good all round protection for water and UV. Oak posts are easier to maintain and you could treat them with the same. Sadolin do do a clear stain which maybe worth looking into. Unfortunately we use Sadolin but are not retailers for them.

Hi Sarah. It was a tricky one as there is so much conflicting advice online. Plus you don’t always know how or where the timber has been stored prior to being assembled. Best advice I found for treated (or tanalised) timber was if you flick some water at it and it beads or rolls off then it needs to weather for the appropriate time and if it soaks in then you’re good to go. I left it for a few days under cover before painting and just used Sadolin Superdec opaque in the end. 3 years on and the paint is as good as when it was first done. There are a few splits in the grooves where the timber has swollen over the winter months but nothing to affect the performance of the paint. Really easy to keep clean as well, just a hose down and wipe with cloth 🙂. My advice would be to use a water based product. If it’s oil based then I think you’d definitely need it to weather for 3-6 months. I’ve heard many good things about Tikkurila paints, would love to try some one day. I recently used Bedec barn paint on my latest shed and was surprised how well it applied, 2.5 litres did the whole lot with 3 coats and some left over! No colour choices tho but I wanted black anyway, although I had a bit of a wobble and was tempted by a Swedish barn red😊. Time will tell if if it lasts! Some pics, 1st not long after painting and 2nd taken earlier this year, shed 2 is now black! Lots of landscaping still to do 🙂.

Hi honeyry. I don’t think it would look weird having the lawn on the left as it would be more central to the patio. Hope you don’t mind but I took the liberty of doing a quick sketch as well. It still uses the full length of the garden so should keep your footie fan happy 😊. What I do think is that you need more definition to your borders so using a lawn edger to keep grass encroaching on plants/shrubs/trees (see pics). This will keep plants healthy in the long run as they won’t be competing for nutrients. Also added a patio and shed in the top right NW corner. This might be a nice little sitting area in for a morning cuppa, the shed and the addition of some trellis would give you some privacy from the neighbours. Something like this wouldn’t need doing straight away as I’ve kept the basic layout with the path relatively unchanged. Did add a little extra in the way of a little semi circle of hard landscaping in front of the seps. This is just a transition between borders, lawn and patio and could be anything...paving, tiles, cobbles and so on. There are a plenty of plants that are suitable for your garden. The RHS website is a valuable resource when researching. Two that spring to mind which are virtually indestructible (great for stray footballs) are red valerian and buddleia. Both need hacking back to near ground level in late autumn and will grow like the clappers come spring. Be aware that red valerian (also grows well north facing) can be considered invasive in some parts as it self seeds prolifically and usually where you don’t want it like in the walls or in between paving slabs but it’s easy enough to pull out. For improving the lawn I’m sure there are plenty of tips and tutorials online. I myself have a dog that makes a right mess of the grass. I’ve recently purchased this stuff https://www.envii.co.uk/shop/neuturine/ but I’ve yet to test it so can’t vouch for it and its a little expensive for what it is. Supposed to to change the Ph of the soil so that urine doesn’t burn it (or something scientific like that 🙂). Just hope it works! Here‘s my sketch and pics.
