Driveway Dilemma
Comments (2)I think that can easily be achieved. What is important, is to not cut off the front to back access. However, creating an intimate seating area can be done, by putting up your wooden gates, or fence and gate, at say 12 feet from the garage door, and putting up a simple pagoda, which will give you visually the idea that you're in a courtyard type setting....See MoreCement plinth and new driveway
Comments (0)Finally finishing off the driveway and exterior of our 1930s house after renovating. The drive is going to be a warm red block paving. The picture and wall are the colours in mid painting, Plymouth grey on the wall and a dark grey on the door. I have 2 dilemmas and so many questions. The house has a cement skirt or plinth around the bottom. All the houses in the street have it and I’ve no idea what is behind or where the doc is. We have laid concrete and underfloor heating inside and removed the air bricks. The cement has cracks all over, some kind of injection holes and massive patches where the air bricks were removed. It looks dreadful but I don’t know what should be done. Can I patch it and paint it (what colour?)? Remove it and redo it (sounds expensive)? Patch it and skim it? The next issue is the step. We removed a horrid extension with a terracotta floor. When we lay the be drive I’m in 2 minds about a step. I’ve looked at regulation heights it’s a close call. Without an additional step it would be 250mm and the reg is 220mm. Can/should I ignore that and leave without a step or lower the drive and add a step at have it at 150mm. If I did that what colour/style should the step be???? Argh too many factors to consider and my husband isn’t interested and the builder is so vague!...See MoreDriveway dilemma 1930s house
Comments (9)Agree ED, I think design your front garden to take your cars since parking is the bane of existence but include some planting pockets where possible for some tough shrubs. The plant below is “Baggesons gold” a shrub lonicera which grows quick and gets untidy strands but you can really hack it and shape it without killing it so good for any skill level I think...See MorePaving colour for driveway - To match or not to match?
Comments (138)These are my Japanese acers, I selected the shorter varieties since the drive isn't huge. The red one is approximately 10yo, the other two are 6-7 yo. They grow quite slow and stay compact,in my opinion. I tried to take the photos in front of our Cooper so you get the idea of the sizes. They are Garnet (2+ m) Bi Ho (2m) and Winter Flame (1.5m and it grew 50cm during the last three years). Acers can be shaped, I'll be removing some lower branches to add some structure. They are gorgeous in autumn and passers-by often stop to admire....See Moresothnd8
