Breakfast bar and/or dining table

I can't decide whether we ought to have both a breakfast bar and dining table or just have one or the other... We do enjoy entertaining people, but I'm thinking of just having a table at the end of the island instead of a breakfast bar and dining table. We could maybe get an extending table to accommodate bigger numbers and have something like the picture below at the end of the island. I've attached pictures of our current planned layout and the option with the breakfast bar. Wondering what the Houzz thoughts are on the matter and whether former dining tables are now redundant in modern living!

In my opinion you need to get your kitchen designer to show you the whole room (including dining area) on a computer generated image. I think that you might conclude that it would be better to have more room for an extending dining table- it is after all a big house and if you have guests staying you may well need breakfast room for 8 or more.
I also think the width of the room means the island is not particularly deep and making it longer may emphasise that.
I think I might just put a couple of stools on the hall side of the island- not for breakfast but for wine and conversation while you are entertaining.

I concur ! Until you see it all drawn up, to scale or even better - as a panoramic ( like we do for our clients ) you won’t be able to decide!
If you don’t want to feel beholden to one company - you could hire an independent designer ( like us) who don’t sell product. Then take your plans to lots of places to compare like for like.

I'd like to add air extractors don't have a grease filter. It may increase smells (and everything that goes with stinky dirt) on the long run.. But most important: "An point to be checked is the required airflow for you extractor, normally this depends on the size of kitchen and also the type of cooking. The correct airflow for an extractor can be easily worked out, simply multiply the volume of the room by ten and you will obtain the ideal airflow for your kitchen. For example for a kitchen size of 4m x 4m with a height of 2.7m: (4 x 4 x 2.7) x 10 = 432. Therefore any product with the airflow of 432 m3/h will provide efficient ventilation."

If you just want a prep surface and overhang for stools with some open storage then a wooden topped kitchen or dining table, raised up with something like newel posts or similar to work bench height with a shelf inserted between is very effective. If you require a deeper overhang (I believe overhangs larger than 15cm might need bracketing and the tabletop secured well to prevent tipping) then you could place an additional work top over it. You could paint the feet, legs and shelf to match your perimeter units or as an accent colour. Maybe a little on the rustic side but I have seen it with a back gloss kitchen with pine top and cream legs and shelf and it looks good, warming up the black.

Hi Izzi, What a lovely room you have! I am sure your kitchen is going to look gorgeous regardless! Out of the three layouts you have suggested, personally, I feel option 1 is the best. Reason being, the other two are creating more boundaries which will affect the open feel you are after and feel less spacious. With angular rooms like this one, it is best to keep it simple. I f you wanted to make the kitchen bigger (and didn't mind seeing cabinets from the living area) you could extend the long run of cabinets down to the pillar. Then move the dining table closer to where the sideboard current is. This would make the kitchen feel more grand and spacious, rather than it being tucked away. I don’t think the hatch adds anything to the rooms so I would remove the wall but not in its entirety. It’s a narrow kitchen but I wonder if a U shaped kitchen might work. This would necessitate blocking the kitchen door that leads into the hall. Access to the kitchen would then only be from the lounge roughly located where the hatch is now. Leave the base units that house the sink and hob where they are and run slimline base units along the kitchen/hall wall. I have heard of people using wall cupboards for this purpose. You could perhaps have open shelves above. Going back to the wall with the hatch. Take it down to base unit height on either side. Or slightly above to screen the work surfaces from the lounge/dining room and take it down to ground level where the hatch currently is to allow access. You would of course need to relocate the radiator but that shouldn’t be too much of a job.

Aesthetically I don't like islands, but I know I'm in the minority on this. The practical stuff is important ( layout, sizes etc) but don't neglect what makes your heart soar. Google is your friend. Houzz is good but ultra modern designs predominate.Find a dream kitchen and create your version. My dream kitchen is below. I think my actual kitchen will eventually be even better, and that's the fun of being able to choose the environments we live in. Good luck!

I think making it an island with table attached makes it too long and thin - I wouldn't want to have to walk around the whole thing just to get across the room. Have two stools at the island (I wouldn't do that circular thing at the end of an island, looks like a cookery show where they have guests perched at the end to chat in an awkward way) and have separate dining table. Just keep pathways clear for people to navigate around and through the room.

I think you're right, I don't think I actually want a full breakfast bar at the end of the island, just somewhere to perch. I was getting thrown by having two places to eat next to each other. Think I'll scrap the breakfast bar idea!
