Matchy matchy curtains and sofa?

Amy thoughts on this? I'm about to take ownership of a large amount of sage green velvet curtains. My living room will be painted dark grey with an exposed brick chimney breast and a green leather-topped brass fender. The floor is natural pine. I'm keen on green curtains so will use one set as nature intended. Shall I make a slip cover from the other curtains for my lurid sofa? The alternative is to make a slip cover out of some dark blue velvet curtains which don't fit the window. PS I won't be using the frilly bit on my windows.

Comments (14)I would add the palest of pink silk curtains. You could also pick up the colour as feature walls where you have your book case and the print by the brown chair. This corner looks dark and so would brighten it and maybe replace the art with a statement mirror (floor to ceiling.) I would also paint the wall with the fireplace the same colour. Not a deep pink merely a hint of blush. I once read an American interiors magazine which featured sunny country homes and the designer was show casing her projects where she had used pale pinks. Comments (13)Hi The great thing about grey is that it is a neutral and can be pretty much mixed with anything:-) A few pieces and possibly prints in duck egg, black , a copper lamp or table, and you have your scheme. I have attached a few images below just to show you the diverse range of options and how anything goes. I don't know if your style is contemporary or more relaxed but the same theories apply - Interiors in my opinion look more interesting when things are not too matchy matchy. If you bought a copper/brass influenced, coffee table, lamp, side table, duck egg throw, a couple of cushions with duck egg and maybe white, black or muted green, a vase in teal, black etc. I know you get the idea. It can cost as little or as much as your budget allows and as you find pieces or things you love, they will all fit in beautifully but it will have a lovely relaxed feel. 5 years agoHi Sam. What size is the fender? I always thought they should fit as per 2nd pic although have found a number of images suggesting otherwise. I'm not convinced you have room for the curtains to hang outside the panelling with a tv cabinet but even more so with the fender? Have you considered Roman blinds with privacy film for the lower half (assuming you can get the pleats out of the curtains!)? Excuse my awful photoshop but assuming the fender and fabric are set in stone can you add pink and potentially a touch of yellow? The house of hackney print may be something you like (?!) for a lamp shade, framed wallpaper, cushion etc as I think it works well with the age of the house although you may hate it! I think you could get away with the chair being covered in the velvet as long as you introduce other colour and patterns? You could also add a trim to the blind so it doesn't look matchy matchy (although the frilly bits are very on trend for modern Victorian :) )
I wasn't too sure of the fabric colourhappy mentioned as I couldn't find the wiggle (!) but I'm assuming it was the pre fall collection of 2017 which was pink, brown and mustard which would work really well with the brick and floor if the green wasn't set in stone?

5 years agoOh I love when new ideas are thrown into the mix. The sage green velvet is awesome. Typically nothing is simple so I'm going to be sewing two curtains out of four slightly too small ones. But I have plenty of material. And low standards.
Colourhappy I can't find the Orka Kiely image you mention, though I did see a model string in front of a tumeric yellow sofa which is the colour I now want for my dream sofa ( estimated to be afforded by next summer).
And Minnie101 what awesome inspo pics! I love the idea of using the frilly braided swaggy trim with the curtains. I think it'll look the right kind of twee ( a la House of Hackney ), especially alongside the plaster battered bricks of the chimney breast. The fender should be fine. It's adjustable so I can have it the width I want. You may be right about the TV blocking the curtain though. I'll have to play with the angle and position, see if I can create a gap the curtain can slide through. Couple of pics below just to show colour of curtain vs panelling. And the TV almost in position . Shelf building will happen soon. The walls go grey tomorrow /monday!
ED nature intended curtains to be used as curtains and I was proposing to use them as upholstery fabric. Fate ( and the ridiculous size of the window) has taken me in a different direction now . Maybe 80s Aztec sofas will get trendy soon..

5 years agoThought I'd update you on wall colour. Room is a work in progress but this bit is done. plus tracks are ordered for curtains, and goose feathers for central pendant diy fluffy lampshade.

5 years agoHa. It's been knackering! And I still have a lot of rooms to do in this place. I don't even know my own mind nevermind anyone else's! I'm at work but bf has finished painting and started arranging furniture which is very exciting. Though he hates the golden pouffe. BTW radiator will be painted fakey downpipe too, when I get round to it. New sofa is only a glimmer in my eye at the moment.

5 years agoThat was quick :-) This is low, but if you like the idea, you could use taller bookcases. Do attach them to the wall though. Safety first and all that.

From my bedroom but I do love it. And TV stand I found in the back lane. I might keep it red. Or spray it yellow, gold or pink...
