open staircase no bannister

when I had a loft conversion the buildet at that time (1980's) stated it was the law to include a bannister. however, I see many modern updates in present magazines that show complete open staircases without a bannister or rail on any side. What are the present day requirements?

Building codes vary considerably from place to place.

Oh that’s tricky. It’s not a current style but it’s lovely wood and very nicely made. I think I’d be inclined to keep it as is, unless you really dislike it. Will the stripes be changing...? I think it may look a lot more current with more modern decor. I would probably paint the stringer (I think that’s what the big flat bit at the side is called) to match your built in storage, but leave the handrail and end post unpainted.

I agree with you 100%. Design is all well and good but if it doesn’t function well then it soon loses its appeal and for me if it means more cleaning then forget it! The images on the blog look great though I notice that the treads are also ply. Like you I am not entirely convinced ply will work with teak. I think it would be a shame to paint the teak so could you do the reverse of what you propose, keep the teak and have painted the rails? Another consideration is painted rails will stand up to wear and tear much better than painted treads. Wumis suggestion to use metal is good though I would prefer something softer such as laser cut metal panels which come in all sorts of patterns. The coppery colour of Corten steel might look good. They would also create patterns from the light shining through from the roof light. Good lighting might be another consideration. Box in the treads and use strip LED lights hidden under the treads. Not quite the same but once the children are grown you could remove the risers. These could be painted to match the rails. I expect the teak is slathered in a hard varnish that crazes and scratches easily and cannot be repaired. It would be nice to take it back to the wood and finish it in something that is easier to maintain. I used Sikkins on new oak window frames which was a doddle to maintain. Mind you it won’t be so much of a doddle to strip the varnish off the teak! A job not for the faint hearted but, none the less, worthwhile.

opening up walled stairs in small terraced house

looking at moving into a small terreced house, it has the typical layout of two main rooms downstairs and the staircase running through the middle. I am wondering if it is possible to get rid of the walls on either side of the stairs or atleast one side to open up the downstairs and make it lighter and airier. Any ideas if this is possible or how much it would cost?

Hi Angie, thank you so much for your reply. The plan is to do something like the picture below, though integrated appliances and a slight change of colour scheme/material of table. At the moment they're currently only base cabinets on that wall, so all I lose is one cabinet where I'm moving the fridge to (currently where the 'walkway' will be). I did consider a hatch and saw some lovely styles with beams etc to really elegant the room. However, I moved in here 7 weeks ago and I cannot tell you how much times it's frustrated me that I have to leave the table and walk round to the kitchen I.e my little one wants milk instead of water to drink, drops cutlery on the floor and needs a replacement, needs another napkin etc. The gap next to the radiator is quite small, however there's another one under the window so to be honest I have no issue capping this off, or changing it for a really slim tall one. Bookcase sounds like a good idea. Could do with the toy storage!
