What are the trees along either side of the gravel path?

Absolutely echo comments above regarding raising the soil level around the tree, a big no no as it will mean at best the tree will struggle and fail to thrive and will probably eventually die. Decking is a good solution if you want to install a seating area around the tree, with planting around it to soften the edges. I would maybe look at a composite decking as it will mean less maintenance and will not become as slippery as timber in a shaded area, also if going for a contemporary look it can look very sleek, especially if choosing a grey or even black. You could also add in some lower growing shrubs, herbaceous, spring bulbs etc and create a edge of woodland feel to this area, which would have interest and create a lovely view, whatever the time of year. I'm fortunate enough to have both Summer and Winter holidays, so very difficult to chose my ideal.... In Winter I adore skiing and all social activities involving that, and in Summer I adore the beach, the sea, the sun, BBQ's and all those social activities as well. But I also enjoy long walks in the country side on a crisp Spring day, or in a beautiful Autumn forest enjoying the different colours as the trees and plants go to sleep. As an outdoor person, I really find it difficult answering this question, so choosing "other" for me was the only answer I could give. Of course I also enjoy Cities - London, Paris, New York and Milan, Cape Town, Nice, St. Petersburg. Oh dear, so many places to see, so little time :-))

Hi, Olive and Bay trees do need some sunlight to thrive but there are many shade tolerant alternatives. If you're looking for the ball or lollipop shape then how about a holly. Topiary shrubs would also survive well I think, Taxus baccata (yew), Buxus Sempervirens (English boxwood), Ilex Crenata (Japanese holly) are good examples. Real or Fake? What type of Christmas tree do you have?

We have one of each. The real on goes in the sitting room and is carefully decorated, all colour coordinated, and meticulously done by the wife. In the conservatory we have the fake one which is decorated by the kids - so it looks like a tinsel factory has exploded, baubles of all shapes/sizes/colours randomly bunched everywhere, flashing lights, tacky beads/bells. You can only make out a tiny bit of green tree under all the stuff (I absolutely love it, it's got so much character, but I'll still go in there any tidy it up a bit when the kids are in bed as most of it is only 'decorated' up to my waist height, so I do move some of it to the top 1/2 of the tree. Got to love the smell of a real tree as well
