bifold door installation

Thinking of putting 12foot bifold door to replace a slider. Only have 6 inches above the door. What kind of header will we need to withstand the load of the door. Would a 4x6 header work? Thank you

Hi there!

You would need a beam that could hold about 600 lbs per panel.
So if you had a 5 door panel system at 3’ wide by 12’ tall each, it would be 3000 lbs.

You will need to talk to the person who would be installing the
header to make sure it can take the amount of weight you will be putting on it.

After going through the same dilemma, we are so happy we went with bifolds. They open out the whole space whereas sliding doors still leave you with some glass (a doors width). Well worth the extra money. Of course if you only have a small opening then perhaps double opening french doors would be better than sliding doors.
