Wood in living areas and carpet in bedrooms, but what to have in hall?

Hi,

I've got a bit of an odd layout to my house but gradually we are getting it to work. We are just at the stage now of putting down flooring and we want wood flooring in the main kichen diner living space (denoted with the pinky colour), we have another slightly elevated living space which we are going to carpet to differentiate the two areas. We would also like carpet in the bedrooms for comfort.

We do however have a slightly unusual entrance way and due to the layout the shoes and coats etc are stored on a wall a little distance from the door.

I was trying to decide is the narrow hallway to the bedrooms should perhaps be carpeted, if the main entrance hall and bedroom hallway should all be wood or if i could maybe introduce a bit of tile also for when coming in with dirty shoes?

I'm just a bit confused as to the best option, my instinct is to have wood all the way through with maybe a small square of tile in the porch and we will just have to deal with dirty shoes moving from one side of the entrace hall to the other but i was just curious what others thought?

My first thought: continue the wood from the living room through into the hall and have a really big mat in the porch (we have a cut to size mat in our porch, covers the entire porch area).

I would continue the wood from the living room into the hallway and tile the porch area. We tiled the entrance to our (as yet unfurnished) hallway... the rest of the hallway is engineered oak. In addition to the practical benefits of tiling the entrance, I just like the look of the tile next to the wood...

Finally finished the hall and the transformation is complete. Kept the doors but painted the architrave and all other woodwork (Farrow & Ball Dimity Eggshell). Walls (F & B Joa's White Modern Emulsion) Carpet is sisal. Window shutters California Shutter Co. Wall up/down-lighters John Lewis, as are the ceramic radiator shelf lights, painted to match wall. LED Panel 'skylights' are magical. Wired to an external Dusk 2 Dawn sensor via a relay (To transpose output to Dawn 2 Dusk) they are activated by two occupancy sensors either end of the hallway and only operate during daylight hours, thus giving the very real effect that it's daylight flooding in. The wall lights are for night time and if it only needs to be subdued lighting, then the remote controlled shelf lights are used. The flickering flame wall sconces either side of the old loft door are for amusement at best, but look nice. Now to find some suitable wall decoration and also fit a curtain and tie-back at the mid-point. That will allow guests who use the end bedrooms some night time privacy when using the bathroom down there. Thanks to all you Houzzers for your input and support!

When choosing flooring you want warmth, comfort and not too much sound when people are walking about. However, wall to wall carpeting is a little outdated. Our choice would be a rug on hard flooring, it ticks all the boxes and gives you so many exciting choices!

Hi Simone, We can't help but love parquet in a hallway and feel it would work well with the traditional look of your carpet and stairs. What colours are your surrounding wood floors? You're right that parquet wood floors have a mix of tones which could help the hallway to blend more seamlessly with the others. Oh man, I decided to brave Ikea on a Saturday and sad to say that Martin was quite uncomfortable! I mean, the seat itself was fine and nothing a nice seat cushion couldn't fix, but the back rest felt like its designed so that you'll have to sit perfectly upright to be remotely comfortable in it. I suppose its good for posture if nothing else, but not something one wants for a dining chair! The Svenbertil was a lot more comfy for about the same size, though a bit more expensive. I was thinking of perhaps a couple of smaller side tables instead of an actual coffee table. Not sure yet. I think I'll have to wait until the sofa gets delivered and I have it in the space before I can really decide. Generally not a fan of glass table surfaces as I can get a bit obsessed over fingerprints and glass just attracts them! I really liked this coffee table when I saw it in the showroom, then I saw the price tag. Yeah, visually on the plan I don't think the long table would work that well in terms of the flow of the space, and I think I'm going to stick with a round one. Surprisingly, the space seemed to be able to fit a D100+/- 5cm relatively well after I folded some towels and tape out the area. The Ikea one you pointed out seems ideal in terms of size, but being all white, seemed a tad boring... though I suppose I could have different chairs to mix it up a bit... a pair in white and a pair in oak. Hmm...

If you went for wood floor in the larger hall area - with a large square rug made in the carpet you have with the edges whipped - you can have the best of both worlds. And with a square rug you can turn it regularly to even shy wear and tear ! ( and shoes can stay around the edges )

Depends what kind of wood you are having in the main room. If it's mid or dark colour and a little bit rustic then that works for a hall too, as long as you won't mind if the odd scratch appears over time. If you're having something very light or smooth in the kitchen I would be cautious of having that in a hall as dirt and marks will show much more. In that case I'd choose tile.

I would suggest to tile the porch and hall, easier to clean, more durable, would't scratch as much as wooden floor (usually by those little stones stuck in the shoes). You can choose a bold design and make it a statement.
