help - where to put wine rack(s)?

Hello all,

Looking for peoples opinions, unfortunately we have recently found out that have to amend our kitchen layout (designed brilliantly by Karen at one plan!) due to some engineered bricks supporting a steel beam getting in the way and reducing the width of wall we thought we had for the units by 10cm.

So have jiggled things around a bit, have now got 300mm left over which we were going to use for a wine rack (either 1x 300 or 2x 150), which I am struggling to decide where to locate!

The units along the back wall are as follows (left to right as viewed)

600 pull out larder
600 integrated F/F
600 base bin unit
800base sink
600 dishwasher
600 tall single oven
600 tall micro oven&warming drawer

I accidentally voted for the wrong one! Duh!

I meant to vote for the last option, at the end by the larder - my thinking being, you'll need to access the wine rack less than other parts of the kitchen and so they don't need to be central in the kitchen.

Plus not only as Alix W pointed out, you should keep it away from heat, you should also keep it away from sunlight, so the further away from the windows the better.

silly question, but how much wine do you want 5o store as you're talking the difference of as few as bottles for in the base units vs circa 22 for 2 full height units?

We currently have a 20 bottle wine rack and most of the time I it is full and we have to store elsewhere!

Hi Caro, I have attached two images of wall paper that I think you compliment your kitchen. The green and blues in these wallpapers would harmonise with the existing titles and highlight the height of the room. From your ideas book it seems you like repeat patterns, both of these styles suggest a 60s feel whilst remaining contemporary. As you can see in the second photograph, the pattern and colours sit very well with the dark shiny worktop, similar to the one you mention putting in at a later date. The first wallpaper is affordable and ethically sourced. Let me know what you think

Thanks pjbell! My first thought was 'no way, we use bedroom 2 and can't lose it - far too radical'. But then I stopped and looked and actually, that may well be worth considering! All bedrooms are in use - bedroom 2 is our studio/craft room/office. Kids are in the back bedroom and top floor. I've got my heart set on an en-suite and keeping our large bedroom but have been mindful of making the studio too small so was opting for a small shower room. I've been pondering if there is anything we could do to have a larger family bathroom but couldn't see how. This could give a large family bathroom and more luxurious en-suite. The back room is south facing so would be much better for a studio - its worth seeing the size if we split into two bedrooms. I do like the fact that all bedrooms are decent doubles and wouldn't want them much smaller. We are going to be here for the next 10-15 years and will then look to downsize when the kids have flown the nest. This will be the only major work we'll do so although it needs to be right for us, I also want it to be as appealing as possible to the next family. Definitely food for thought - thanks!

Thanks for the replies. @Ellie I think my partner got the idea of a horizontal one from a one pitch roof photo on here. they do look really nice. @oneplan that's a really good point re lining up windows if they are horizontal. Although I think long horizontal ones is the builders last choice as he says they'll take longer to install. We're paying a day rate so trying to get everything pinned down in advance and as slick as possible. Our internal layout is slightly different to the floor plan I added to the comments. The kitchen is going in the centre in the 'old' extension (front of the house is Victorian and existing extension is 1990s). The new extension will have the sitting area on the left and the dining area on the right (so the opposite of the floor plan). This is because the wood burner will need to go on the left side and we want the seating area around that. Do you have any thoughts on narrow vehicle windows one on either side for the gable roof? I'll try to find the photo of what I mean. Thanks

In which case definitely 2 full height but without seeing the layout, I'd go for breaking up the widest span of full height ones, usually around the fridge freezer. I recently went through this planning round and had it all worked out before falling in love with a solid oak one that has meant a complete revision!

The main thing with wine is to keep it away from heat - and to try to keep the temperature stable. So not next to the oven, ideally. Does depend how long you’re storing it for, though!

There's quite a lot of contrast between the wood and units which is breaking the kitchen up IMO so I'm not keen on a few options. I think the 300 unit between fridge and larder works best. I like the idea of the last one too but not sure as it's next to the filler. I wonder how it would work with a darker wood too?

I voted for the version between fridge and larder. Looks more balanced than right at the end. And I wouldn't want the wine next to the ovens.

On reflection, I agree with the between fridge and freezer. Ignore my vote of one either side. It will also save you some money as one unit is generally cheaper than .

Thank you everyone for comments - Minnie I agree the wood contrast unsettled me a bit, the wood colour is not set in stone - we are getting from DIY kitchens and they have a variety of different carcass colours so will have a look which one goes best with the blue we’ve chosen for the doors - they do do a darker wood which might be better but tbh I don’t think their online planner shows up the colours terribly well!

Oooh hello !! I would say the last one - left of pantry and FF as they balance with the two ovens then ! And it’s easy to get to without interrupting the chef !

In my humble opinion the busyness of the wine racks is at odds with the simplicity of the design. Could you do without the extra cabinet and fillers and have units that stop short of each end for an unfitted look.

I voted for the 300 between the larder and FF because it looks like it was fitted like it for a purpose, when separated at either end it looks like your trying to make up space and I wouldn't want wine next to the ovens. is it possible to colour match the edging on the wine racks so they blend in more?. I have also seen somewhere maybe on a framed door kitchen that you can get a frontal to go on the wine rack carcases which rounds off the edges nicely.

I'm not sure on that design personally. In Karen's original design, it looks as if you had a 600 sink which lined up with the hob nicely? What if you reduced the sink but increased the larder to 900 and had a 200mm wine rack at the very end on the left? Not sure how that would look?

Do they not do a 300mm pull out tall cupboard/wine rack? makes it look a bit more streamline but you don't lose your wine storage?

Minnie - Diy kitchens don’t seem to do a 900 tall larder unit - plus we really would like a pull out/tandem larder which they don’t do above a 600 size...plus I like the idea of all the tall units with doors being the same width

I’ve gone back to the original idea of wine rack at the end with an open unit above sink so the wine rack does not look so plonked in(hopefully!)

Ah, ok.

if I'm honest I think this is my least favourite option, when I look at the kitchen my eyes just on focus the shelving over the sink which breaks up your lovely kitchen. Personally I'd revert to the original option 5 or 6 but try it with the darker wood. That's just my opinion and obviously do what works best for you :) It's also hard to tell re the colours using the images, are you also having a wood floor or tiles as that will effect the look too?

We are going for a honey coloured wood floor - either engineered wood or wood effect LVT.

just been having a play with another home design app as I think the DIY kitchens planner makes it look dreary - have come up with this:

Think the central breakfast bar looks better but the one at the end is safer

Minus the books (spoils eyeline) and extra ovens (safety first but also spoils the horizontal lines you had) I much prefer this to the last one personally. I'd go for the stools at the end. i know you're keen on symmetry but I might try a larger pendant just at the seating end (with downlights the other)

Thanks minie, yeah I’m pleased with this one too - the app didn’t have an option for a tall unit with just a single oven, so I had to make do with what they had, but yes, we would just have a single oven in one and the other would have a combo micro/oven and warming drawer so it would all line up. And I just shoved a few things on the shelves without really thinking, but yes the open shelving would look neater than that!

I’m also considering whether to have the breakfast bar and the units on the opposite island of the hob to be higher units so it is about 18cm higher than the hob. That way could potentially have the breakfast bar directly opposite the hob, although the higher units would have to be 300 deep which means people sitting even nearer the hob, albeit higher up - I’m not sure if the hob would still pose a risk in this case with fat splashes etc?

lol, thats annoying as it throws out the whole design!

i personally prefer a sleek look for the island. In terms of practicality for seating in the middle I've got an aga with a shelf behind, I've just measured the back of a plate to the wall and it's 42cm so splashes definitely go a long way, mind you there's far less control with an aga :( Are you having sliding doors to the living room as per Karen's design as that would be my first choice for stools?

Ah that’s good to know - will stick with a single level island and have breakfast bar at the end. Yes the sliding door we are keeping - wanted pocket sliding door but it’s a supporting wall - the only other think we were thinking were a pair of narrow internal bifolds, that fold in the middle and thus do not stick out much in the kitchen or the living room

I really like the original design. If you have a 10cm reduction in space can't you just make one unit 50cm rather than 60cm?

Hi Jen, yes I really liked the original design too :(

If we made the end tall unit 50cm it would bug me that there was an odd one at the end - plus to keep the hob and sink lined up we’d need to move the island along 10cm, which might make it too tight in the thoroughfare to the living room behind the breakfast bar...

It’s amazing how a measly 10cm messes everything up! :(

To the side is ok - but directly behind a job is not a good place to seat people .
