Tell us your best or worst neighbour stories!
Comments (34)The shortest time we lived in a house was 18 months - the neighbour turned out to have serious psychological problems, he took against me within weeks, pushing notes through letterbox saying I was a female she devil and deserved to burn in hell etc, etc. and quoting bible stuff. I had not even seen or spoken to him at that point, just held perfectly normal conversations with his partner. Then it was pounding on our adjoining walls at night, digging up the plumbing pipes behind our houses (he didn't want polluted excrement through the pipes?!) going out to his work leaving the Magic flute playing at full blast (echoes an episode of Morse?) until we had to call the police. The culmination was a throwing bricks at our french windows standing in our garden, apparently attempting to stone me (something biblical again?). We couldn't sell the house to anyone but a landlord who "took it off our hands" at a price below what we paid for it. I felt guilty as he continued to harass various renters afterwards, but eventually they moved out, not before breaking the legs of the last occupant next door. The police were very politically correct throughout and of course I felt immensely sorry for his condition, but have to wonder about care in the community as opposed to the days when people with serious psychiatric problems were locked up for their own good and the good of others. What do people think on that score??...See MoreWhat does rural living mean to you?
Comments (32)In the Summer the countryside is almost unbeatable. The walks, just the beauty of it all changes your whole perception of the world for the better. There are downsides though. We live down a narrow dead-end lane with only a handful of houses but it's not as quiet as you might think, what with walkers, who think no pavements mean it's ok to walk 3 abreast in the middle of the road, horse riders who use their high position to look over your fence and have a nosy, 'sat nav says so' idiots (FOUR signs at the end of the road that tell them to turn back and they STILL carry on) and cyclists who think that because it's the countryside they can ride at high speed around winding bends and look disgusted that someone may be walking along the road. Also in the Winter it can feel isolated and lonely, with frequently flooded lanes and virtually non-existent public transport. A car is essential, deliveries unreliable and amenities non-existent but even with all the negatives there's something about looking at a stunning view that can whisk all your cares away in an instant. I've attached a couple of pics of MY view so you can make up your own mind...See MoreWould you rather live in a one or multi-storey home ?
Comments (11)For many years my partner and lived in an apartment in Central London; and a couple of years ago when we started house-hunting we discovered - unsurprisingly - that in houses with stairs and a decent sized landing, a significant percentage of living space was - in our view - wasted. Yes, some people like the drama of an open staircase - but I'd rather use the upstairs space as a study and the downstairs as an extension to the kitchen. And besides - vacuuming stairs is a pain. Eventually we bought a bungalow - and touch wood, haven't looked back. One friend quipped that we'd bought a flat with a garden but without upstairs neighbours; while for us there's an easy progression of rooms leading into rooms - the flow from kitchen to dining to drawing room makes for relaxed entertaining, and the early morning amble from bedroom to coffee machine can happily be made in the dark. For some, bungalow living occurs when stairs become a problem - but for us, it was always about space and style....See MoreWhat project What DIY project are you working on?
Comments (47)Hi Beano mulling it over but I think I will keep the actual drawers vintage brown with the rest dark blue/matt black. Trying to source handles as the current ones for the most part are shot (even though I like them) The room I think I'd hoping to be dark blue with a pale wall and possibly a papered feature wall?? Still planning and strippjng paint. putting together a mood board at the moment....See More- 5 years ago
