Skirting boards paint colour?

This is my first home so I’m an absolute novice when it comes to selecting paint. I’ve selected wall colours in Matt finish from Little Greene. But I’m just wondering what the norm is for skirting boards (and picture hanging rail, and the white area above). Should the paint be pure white or an off white, should it also be Matt to match my walls or should it be eggshell? Little Greene have a wide selection of white paints SEND HELP!

It depends on lots of things. What is the colour you have chosen for the walls, and is it a traditional or contemporary look you are after? With pale walls a slightly darker skirting board can look very good, or you can obviously go lighter which may look more traditional. Painting all the same colour can also work and make the whole scheme look unified, this works with lights and darks. In terms of colour, most people go white but I have never used pure white, I prefer to choose a colour that is form the same 'hue' family but slightly darker. Little Greene have enough o a range that there should be plenty to choose from. Eggshell is always my choice for woodwork.

In a couple of rooms, that we've done recently, we've matched the skirting to the walls, all in a matt finish. Seems to work well and looks good.

However, in rooms where we have a lot of doors (like the hall - 6 doors, understairs cupboard & white stair splindles) we've kept with white skirting to go match with the white doors.

What did you decide to do paulinehenderson? I have a similar dilema - our walls are currently painted white (works well as it's a north-facing room), so I think white skirting might look too bare. Thinking about colour-matching to the Antique White, but not sure the contrast will be enough to work well - maybe a darker colour would be better?

Wimbourne white has a yellow quality and therefore will sit very well with any white with a yellow or green quality. However almost everything you will consider will be darker than wimbourne white. For this reason I would put Wimbourne white on the ceiling and woodwork and choose another colour for the walls such as f&b bone or Dulux jasmine white. Make sure you are happy with the colour at night as electric light will make these appear more yellow.

So skirting boards need to be the same colour as the doors!?

It can work especially well, also with lighter colour doors (in fact have used this look in a new built maisonette flat in Fulham, not the photos below), go for it!
